My husband and I began the adoption process in March of 2010. We had no preference as to boy vs. girl and we had idea when we would be chosen or how far along our birthmother would be. We created a gender neutral nursery using a bird (nature) theme, inspired by a painting of a sparrow. I found a rug at Nebraska Furniture Mart and matched the wall color to the blue in that rug. I cut birch trees out of white contact paper to create two accent walls, and I made a mobile out of tin birds I found at Hobby Lobby and twigs from the yard.  Our son was born on September 3rd and we've been able to personalize his room little-by-little with his name and colorful toys/books. I created the artwork over his crib by cutting bird silhouettes from craft paper. I also covered paper mache letters with fabrics to spell his name.  Our son is such a blessing and we love the relaxed mood in his nursery.
