Clean + Simple Vintage Race Car Nursery
Design Inspiration
When it came time to the nursery – I focused on collaborating a theme with simple details that told a story about our little family. Everyone always asked me what my “nursery theme” was. I would respond with, “I don’t have a theme, its a feeling…its a collaboration of elements that represent both Kyle (my husband) and I”.
My husband has a love of all-things-race-cars and of course I didn’t want the tacky red and black checkered flagged nursery (nothing against that, but still..). So I went with soft, simple and vintage details instead that showcased my rustic decorative vibes and my husbands love for racing.
Since these images, I added ceiling to floor white black-out drapes (from Pottery Barn Kids) to the windows, which work out perfectly for naps. Along with a small wood side table to hold a humidifier & a Dohm by the glider. Decorating Style
I knew I wanted to start with the color combination of gray, yellow and a blueish turquois (in my head it sounded alright). So the palette I chose incorporated pale grays, a few shades of blues, and a shade of mustard yellow that I like to call “vintage yellow”.
I like to incorporate both vintage and modern pieces in the same space. I also enjoy using a lot of handmade items like the rustic wall shelf I built (p.s. I even went to Home Depot 30 weeks pregnant to grab materials for that DIY project, ha! The lumberyard workers thought i was nuts!) I also love the clean neutral look of white furniture, PLUS it’s gender neutral so you can use it for your next baby. It all tied together nicely!
Advice
Sturdy furniture doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money — We have always been happy with the quality of our IKEA furniture. Then you can splurge at the Land of Nod ; ) Choose a few items to start with for inspiration and go from there. I started with a gray neutral room (Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams), a wooden race car (my rustic piece), a teal pillow and a mustard yellow arrow blanket. Also, in a children’s room, use toys and books as practical decor. Finally, choose a color palette that you love and can live in. Color plays an important role in how we feel when we are in a space. There are many other colors I adore, but since I knew I would be spending a lot of time in this room with my child, I chose a palette that made me feel relaxed and happy.
