Serene Cherry Blossom Nursery

We wanted to create a space that was calming and comfortable for our new baby, something that was appropriate for a little one but could easily grow with her.  We wanted to make sure there were a lot of organized storage options because the room lacks a closet.  While we wanted the room to be girly, we also wanted to avoid it becoming over-the-top pink.  And most importantly for us, we needed to put together a nice space on a budget!  IKEA to the rescue!

Asher’s serene nursery

This room has a lot of things that have meaning to them. The tree wall decal  is my favorite piece in the room. Our daughter was stillborn at 27 weeks in November 2011 and I really wanted to incorporate her in to the room. I love the saying in the Notebook, if you’re a bird, I’m a bird so this tree with the pink and teal birds were perfect. I added scrapbooking stickers to spell out their names. At 26 weeks, we found out that Asher has a severe heart condition. We ended up going to Houston to have a fetal intervention done and we kept saying that the stars were aligning for him so that is where all the stars come in to play.

A Nursery for Baby E

When we found out we were expecting our first child we wanted to be surprised about the baby’s gender, but not about the design of the nursery. We knew we didn’t want frills or footballs, rather a place that was what we consider calming and relaxing – for our baby and for us. We picked gender neutral colors and fabrics, and after ‘she’ arrived added girl touches throughout the room. A good friend, Heather Safferstone, is a local designer and helped us pair down our ideas. She encouraged us to choose things for the room that would work as a nursery but also as our baby grew older and the uses of the room evolved.

Serene, Gender-Neutral Nursery for a Surprise Baby

We waited to be surprised by the gender of our baby boy. That made it tough to come up with a design that was truly gender neutral. So I chose a warm grey paint for the walls and neutral furniture and then brought in pops of mustard yellow and turquoise. I thought it would be interesting and fun for a little one if I hung art that consisted of “found objects”– butterflies and feathers. We also found some great animal prints and an elephant bust to fill the walls.

Seaside Sanctuary

Both my partner and I have a fondness for the ocean. I was raised near to it, and grew up spending my summers at the beach. His is a unique love – he programs autonomous underwater vehicles and spends the majority of his days dealing with the sea in one way or another. We decided to translate that fondness into a nursery for our child. At the time, we did not know the gender so we wanted to keep it somewhat neutral, and wanted a feeling of calm peacefulness, silky sand, and clean ocean air.
