Vintage Modern Nursery in Gray and Turquoise

We have a small house where the nursery is very visible, so I wanted to create a design with a style and colors that would blend in with the rest of the house.   Translation:  Avoid “babyish” themes or colors, while still creating a space that is peaceful, fun, and functional for a child. This is a small room–about 10×12–so it was a challenge to fit in the needed furniture and storage space as part of the design.  We didn’t have room for a dresser, so built removable shelves in the closet to keep clothes, toys, and the plethora of baby “stuff” you need nicely organized.  As his clothes get longer, we’ll remove shelves to extend the space for hanging clothes.  I also added baskets throughout the room (including some great ones on sliders under the crib to store extra diapers!) to add storage that is movable while also bringing natural textures to the room. We wanted the primary color of the nursery to be gray to mix it up because the rest of our house is based in browns, but I left some natural browns in the room (baskets, wood knobs, silk lamp shade) to tie in the rest of the house and balance the cool tones in the room.

Baby’s neutral teal nursery

**Please visit my NURSERY POST on my BLOG if you are adding anything to a Pinterest board to link to the original source.  Thanks and much appreciated!  http://youngnesters.blogspot.com/2011/11/darwins-nursery.html** I wanted something fun, colorful, bright, but gender neutral.  It had to be somewhere I wanted to be since I knew I’d be spending a lot of time there and I tried to stay away from traditional “baby” themes.  More is viewable on my blog.

Addie’s Bright, Cheery Big Girl Room

I loved her nursery, it was soft pink and light green. But she’s 3 now and it was time to update! She LOVES purple and pink, so I tried to find bedding that had both but wasn’t cheesy looking. I found this daisy bedding at JcPenney and everything centered around it and its colors. The walls are a soft lavender that look amazing with the white trim and furniture. I added butterflies around the room because she loves them too. We are both very pleased with the finished product!

Colorful Nursery on a Budget!

We originally weren’t going to find out the gender of out little one, so we set out for a gender neutral room at first.  Then, we buckled and opened our sonogram to find out we’re having a boy!  Needless to say, we tried to stay true to gender neutrality but it’s hard knowing a little boy will grow up in there! I really dislike themes, matching sets, and spending a ton of money on furniture that has a short lifespan.  We bought all the furniture used, I sewed everything in the room except the quilt hanging on the crib – which my mom made for us.  All in all, we created a room that we love for less than $300.  The best part, most of these items will be re-purposed/reused as he grows.
