Abstract Nature Nursery

We are big DIYers and over the last few years, have DIYed a lot of the renovation on our 1960s house. When we found out we were expecting our first child, I knew I wanted to do something fun and special with her nursery. Before we got to the fun stuff like decorating however, the husband did a bunch of research on some bones-work on areas he wanted to improve on the room (things like removing the popcorn ceiling, adding sound-dampening measures to the room etc) and he got to work!
We were gifted a dresser from some friends that had used it with both their kids, so we knew it would be a great project to refresh for our own nursery!
Then, after all that work, it was finally my turn to have fun with designing and painting the nursery (at 33 weeks pregnant too!!)
While I love “themed” rooms and have done my fair share of them in the past, I wanted to design something that would be easy to buy accessories/items for, and not box ourselves into a corner with a too-specific theme. I also wanted to try to design something that in 3-5 years from now, she might still enjoy having as her room.
We are big gardening/nature people, and we also love the feel of mid-century-modern decor, so I took those areas of interest and loosely designed the room around them. I did a combination of MCM and plant shapes for the mural, picked a warm color scheme (most of our house is a combination of warm yellow/green/brown colors as well) and carried that theme throughout the room, by designing and painting some art and unfinished wood decor items to tie the room together!
We’re thrilled with the end result, and it’s been so easy to add items to the nursery, as the colors I used for the mural are very common to find in crib sheets, changing pad covers, baby clothes, stuffed animals etc.
Here’s all the DIY work we did before decorating the nursery

Modern Rustic Nursery

When I found out I was having a boy, I really had no idea what I would do for the nursery. Expecting to have a girl, my Pinterest was filled with floral wallpaper and pink everything. When I started looking at what style I wanted for  our baby boy’s nursery, I was slumped. I originally wanted to do blue wallpaper and keep it very gender neutral. After much contemplating, I realized wallpaper would probably not be the best idea since we are currently renting out house lol. I was back to square one.
I came across a photo on Pinterest that had a featured wood wall and I immediatly knew that’s what I wanted to do. Putting together the wall was actually kind of fun! I told my husband my vision and we worked together to make it happen. After the wood wall was put up, the rest of the nursery just kind of came to life. I decided I wanted to be more adventurous and add little pops of color. Getting the multi-colored rug was a little out of my comfort zone, but I LOVE how it ties the room together! This is definitely our favorite room in the house and I can’t wait to make so many memories in here!

Watercolor Rainbow Nursery

I’ve always loved the idea of a rainbow nursery, but after losing our first pregnancy last year, this theme felt so fitting and perfect for our rainbow baby girl. She has brought so much hope to our lives despite the uncertainty of COVID! This is now my favorite room in the house, and it was honestly a dream come true to put this space together. 🙂 I’m looking forward to spending many hours in here snuggling with our daughter once she arrives in September!
I started designing the room around the rainbow mural, which I made in Adobe Illustrator. The mural is now available for download on Etsy! It turned out even better that way because I could customize the colors and the size to fit the wall! And the project ended up being half the cost – win! From there, I filled in the rest of the space with warm whites, natural textures like woven baskets and bamboo frames, and colors pulled from the rainbow mural.
We decided to skip a changing table and use that space for a daybed instead. My mom will be staying with us for a month after the baby is born, and she’ll be able to sleep in here while the baby sleeps in our room. I think it will also come in handy for long nights so that either my husband or I can catch some sleep while the other parent is up with the baby. I hope we’ll spend many hours of reading books together here, too! 🙂
Since we don’t have a changing table with drawers, I worked hard to maximize the storage space in the nursery closet. It has been nesting headquarters…I can’t even count the number of hours I’ve spent arranging and rearranging things in there! 🙂

Harlow’s Vintage Glam Nursery

I have always dreamed of the day I’d be able to design a baby girl nursery. Honestly, I never thought I would actually see that day, so when we found out Harlow was a girl, my heart fluttered with the thought of creating the perfect nursery for her. My Pinterest board exploded with oodles of inspo pics and I knew from the beginning that I wanted a statement wall… one that would be a total swoon factor when you walked in… so that is where I started and the rest kind of flowed in from there, piece by piece. I mixed in lots of texture and pulled colors from the vintage floral wallpaper. I also made sure to incorporate pieces that would remind me of my grandma, who gained her angel wings while Harlow was in my tummy, such as the sprinkles of eucalyptus, the pampas with their “angel wing-like” vibe, and her favorite color, green. While I splurged on some pieces in the room, like the gold floral mirror, I also mixed in quite a bit of inexpensive items that really make the room come to life.

Harper’s Floral Whimsy Nursery

When I found out I was having a girl, I knew I wanted to go GIRLY! After a very rough-and-tumble boy, I knew it was time for florals and pinks. My jumping off point was the gorgeous Jolie Wallpaper from The Project Nursery Shop. Heart eyes for days! I quickly decided that everything else needed to be fairly neutral with a very clean design and minimal pattern and wall decor. We wanted a very soft gray paint color with pops of gold and just a little bit of pink.
My favorite part of the nursery has to be the gorgeous wallpaper, but a close second is the super-sweet hand-lettered name wall sign from Six Eleven Co. A few other notes – I tried ordering several different more budget-friendly drapes, but ultimately landed with RH Baby & Child’s drapes, which were a bit of an investment for me (hello high ceilings!) but were SO worth it. They are amazing quality and block the light so perfectly during nap time.
I fell for the Babyletto Hudson crib long ago and think that it’s clean lines and modern look are perfect paired with the whimsical floral wallpaper.
I’m always looking for ways to stay a little more organized so the baby shoe organizer DIY was a fun project. Take a simple tension rod and small curtain hooks, spray paint them gold (if you like gold as much as me!) and hang your baby shoes for easy finding. Side note: the shelves above the glider were another easy project – bought them from IKEA and spray painted the brackets (originally silver) gold for a chic look.
What a fun project was for this to work on for our sweet baby girl!
