Terracotta: The New Gender Neutral Color

When my husband and I found out we were pregnant, we knew we wanted to keep our baby’s gender a surprise until birth. With that, came the challenge of creating a gender neutral nursery! I decided I wanted to create a subtle, yet bold gender neutral space for our little one.
I found the sunset/mountain picture at TJ Maxx which became my inspiration.  There were a few things I had my heart set on… a white shiplap feature wall, the hems Ikea dresser with Hirsch and Timber knobs, the lolly 3-1 convertible crib by Babyletto, and some type of bamboo pendant light. I knew I wanted to keep it pretty neutral with creams and ivories but wanted to pull in the terracotta color where I could as my “something bold.” “You are My Sunshine” is a popular song in our household and we thought it was fitting to incorporate it in our new little bundle of joy’s nursery. This room has quickly stolen our hearts and we can’t wait to bring baby home to it.

Whimsical Scandinavian Nursery

Our son’s nursery is the most decorated and complete room in our home.  My intention was to create a modern, gender neutral, Scandinavian inspired space for sleep and play made complete with whimsical and functional bohemian elements. As a nod to my love for arts and crafts I made sure to incorporate some of my own finished pieces. We painted the room a subtle creamy beige and decorated with pale pops of colors. My focal point and inspiration for this nursery was the shiplap wall that my husband installed. After completing this wall the rest came together pretty quickly.
Advice for parents designing their first nursery:
-Avoid feeling confined by commonly identified themes. There should be no hard and fast rule when designing your own space. Instead, identify things you gravitate towards and use them to create your room’s “theme”.  It can be a family heirloom, a keepsake item, a palette, or type of furniture–whatever it may be–use it as inspiration for your design!
-Avoid waiting until late in the 3rd trimester to start building or setting up the first set of items your baby will be using.
-Don’t stress if you cannot complete the room before your baby arrives. You can always make changes and re-curate the room as your child’s needs change.
-Enjoy the design and decorating process. You’ll soon be occupied with baby, and will have little time for projects like this!

Monochrome Modern Nursery

We are expecting our fourth and final baby – a BOY! The general vibe in our home is more of a modern farmhouse, but I have had this desire to do something more modern, and I knew this would be the perfect opportunity! We are big DIYers around here, so I sat down and started planning. I drew up some things that were completely out of our comfort zone, put a ton of hope and faith in my talented husband and showed him my plans. He not only brought my visions to life, but absolutely ROCKED them. This space is small, but mighty…and I am SO proud of the final product.
We designed the feature wall and created it with mdf boards. My husband built the sliding wood door for his closet, wood shelves and the rad modern style blanket ladder we saw on Shanty2Chic’s blog.
