Take Back Your Living Space with these Playroom Must-Haves

I’m in the process of planning a new playroom for my kids, and I wanted to show you a peek at what is in the works. Plus, I’m sharing some of my top tips for planning your new play space, but first, here’s the playroom inspiration board that I created for my kids’ space.

For the first year or so of your sweet little one’s life, your main living space will be filled with every gadget and bouncy, squeaky and oversized toy meant to stimulate and entertain baby. Once my kiddos were about 14 months old, their interests changed and so did their toys, so I decided it was time to take back our living space. We were lucky to have an extra room, and we thought it was important to pull together an organized space that would be kid-friendly and could house all of their toys. That was the turning point when our home office was quickly transformed into a small play area.

We are in a different house now with a loft space that has been assigned as the kids area. This is where many activities take place, including hands-on learning, reading, make-believe play, movie watching, block building and much more! For a room that has to function in so many different ways, there a few essentials to include in the space. Here are a few of my must-haves for a playroom.

Seating. We opted for a sofa with a chaise so there would be plenty of room for our entire family to cuddle up and watch a movie together.

Storage. Whether you have one kiddo or many, a sure way to keep chaos to a minimum is to have plenty of storage.

Books. No playroom is complete without a mini library. My boys love to read, so we try to find books on clearance or at yard sales, book fairs or Goodwill. We love having a variety of books to choose from.

Rugs. A fun, colorful rug adds visual interest, texture and comfort, and it also helps to define a given space. Plus, there are many rugs that double as play mats.

Creative area. An art table, dress-up area or play kitchen really helps to promote creativity and imaginative play.

I usually start with one inspiration piece to help build my color scheme, then I add in the larger furniture pieces and storage components, and I finish off the space by filling in the rest with any additional pieces. Do you have a great playroom or a system in place to help keep toys organized? Feel free to upload your project to our gallery!
