How to Keep a Stylish Home After Baby

I’ve heard the same statement from almost every design client I’ve worked with. “I want to make sure that the nursery isn’t too babyish.” Something has changed over the last several years in regards to the nursery—women are feeling more empowered to design their nurseries as a sanctuary for themselves, and I think that’s a wonderful thing. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting the nursery to feel good to you, and if you’re not into overtly juvenile decor, then there’s no reason you need to have it.

Another challenge outside of the nursery is that after you have children, they pretty much take over the house. Their things are not confined to the nursery, and they’ll be all over every room. But there are some easy ways to choose the right items so you can maintain your personal style without feeling like your house has been taken over. I’ve put together some of my favorite baby items that have real design appeal for adults too.

One of the most stylish high chairs around is the Tripp Trapp. It has such a modern and sleek design that it doesn’t really look like a baby product at all. It also comes in a wide variety of colors, so you can get one to match your house and it won’t stand out like an eyesore. Bonus—it’s adjustable and can eventually turn into a full-size chair, so you can use it for years.

A cradle is one of those things that tends to get dragged around the house, so it’s a good idea to get one that looks nice. It might spend some time in the master bedroom, and it might make its way out to the living room too. The So-ro is like a conversation piece because it’s so interesting to look at.

A lot of nurseries don’t have space for a large toy box, so the toys all end up in the living room. Instead of buying a children’s toy box for this shared space, consider getting an upholstered storage bench. This lovely piece of furniture is functional for toy storage but also acts as extra seating when you have company over. Having one large space to store toys makes clean up a breeze as well.

In the kitchen, you’ll likely have a bottle drying rack somewhere on the counter. I love this design because it actually folds shut so you can put it away when you’re expecting company or just when you’re not using it—genius! It’s also great for traveling.

Yes, even your dining room will be overrun with kids’ stuff! You only have a few precious years before they become aware of all things Disney and Marvel, so get in the good-looking plates and dishes while you still can. This wood dish set is beautiful and simple but also eco-friendly, making it a great choice for multiple reasons.
