In the Nursery with Carrie Colbert

Don’t get us wrong, we can get behind a neutral nursery and its soothing calm tones, but we get seriously excited when we see a nursery that isn’t afraid of color. Today we are touring Carrie Colbert‘s nursery for her daughter Elle, and, boy oh boy, is it just bursting at the seams with color and joy. The nursery masterfully combines bold colors with clean lines and open space to keep the nursery from getting too busy. If you are looking for some color inspiration, be sure to follow Carrie on instagram as well. Thank you, Carrie, for sharing this special space with us!

After a 17-year career in the energy industry, I decided to leave my corporate career to combine my love of business with my creative passion. I launched CarrieColbert.com and the More Color, Please! movement, where my mission is to empower women to live, think and dress with more color. I also actively invest in female-founded and female-run businesses. While all of those pursuits are quite fulfilling, without a doubt, my one-year-old daughter Elle brings me more fulfillment than anything else!

Where did you pull inspiration for your nursery design?
When Laura, of Laura U Interior Design, and I initially started brainstorming for the nursery, I shared a string of random words that came to my mind. That stream of words included mid-century modern influence, blush and gold with bursts of bold colorful accents, inspired by modern art, inspired by a sense of adventure, clean, bright, modern, bold, not cutesy or fussy or too frilly, rainbow touches, and unique.

What part of the design process did you enjoy the most?
As with any interior space, what made this room special was all the love that I poured into it. As a side note, my company tagline is “more color, please!” given my affinity for living a colorful life. So, obviously, from a creative standpoint, my favorite part was the injection of a rainbow of colors!

What is your favorite part or detail in your nursery?
I think my favorite part of the nursery is the very personal art piece in my daughter’s room that I commissioned from Ashley Longshore. I wanted something that would inspire her and guide her over the years. I had this idea for something that conveyed to her all my wishes for her. I literally just jotted down words on my iPhone notes app for a week or so. Once I was confident that I had my wishes pretty much covered, I just text the list to Ashley and let her run with it. No surprise—she nailed it. I could not be more pleased with this art! And it makes my heart ridiculously happy to peek in on Elle on the nursery camera and see her gazing at the painting and taking in all the positivity.

What is one thing that you would tell other parents to consider when starting their own nursery design project?
Make it personal. Create a space that radiates happiness and warmth and love.
