At the Party with Unpacified

Today, instead of visiting a nursery, we’re headed to a party! Leslie Bruce, a New York Times bestselling author, is sharing her daughter Tallulah’s Wild and Three birthday party with us. You can catch up with Leslie over on Unpacified, her site where like-minded women can come together to get real about motherhood—no filters or judgement allowed! Her sweet little family of three is expecting a fourth member—a little boy!—but for today, we’re just here to celebrate Tallulah’s third birthday! Thank you for sharing with us, Leslie.

Where did you pull inspiration for your party?
Pinterest, of course! I wanted her party to feel gender neutral, so both boys and girls would enjoy the theme. I also liked the play on “Welcome to the Jungle” (the Guns N Roses song) so the parents could get a good laugh out of it. Not to mention, “Wild and Three” sums up my daughter perfectly.

What part of the party planning process did you enjoy the most?
Creating the dessert table was by far my favorite part. Not only was it the centerpiece for the event (think: balloons, palm leaves and animal print), it was also a dessert buffet filled with some of those most amazing sweets (panda bear cupcakes, zebra popcorn, funfetti cake, palm leaves and animal print sugar cookies). My husband and I both agree that our least favorite part was blowing up all the balloons. (It took HOURS.)

What is your favorite part or detail in your party?
I hand painted some plastic jungle animals to make them gold for the cake topper, and while that may not be the most eye-catching detail of the party, I was pretty proud of myself for being so crafty.

What is one thing that you would tell other parents to consider when planning a children’s party?
If you have a specific vision, start early. Fortunately, I was able to source Etsy vendors that were local (or semi local) so I could get a lot of supplies at the last minute (like the custom tassel garland from Paper Fox LA). Also, do not be afraid to tackle some of the bigger craft projects yourself. It may seem daunting, but it can actually be really fun and a great way to save some money.
