It’s here once again—cold and flu season. One minute we are basking in the sun, running around the great outdoors and the next we are cooped up in the house covered in tissues and fighting head pain and sniffles. Getting sick is never fun, and it’s especially tough to watch our babies and kids suffer through the symptoms of colds and the flu as well. So, how do you conquer your baby or toddler’s cold like a #SuperMom? Let’s chat!
Swooping in with cuddles and care is our favorite tip and often the easiest to master. Creating a comfortable environment conducive for rest is crucial, but there are also other things you can do to boost baby’s air quality and ability to breathe deeply and heal.
At the first sign of sniffles or congestion, get your humidifier and thermometer up and running! Both tools, partnered with the care of your child’s doctor, are essential for staying on top of baby’s cold. Know your baby’s baseline temperature and keep track of changes as they occur. Aid in your child’s comfort by dressing him or her in light layers. A humidifier in your child’s room during naps and nighttime sleep can help to ease breathing and soothe a cough, as well. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions to keep it clean and running perfectly by using the suggested type of water.
As a mom, you’re likely always wondering “but can I do more?” Yes! Depending on the age of your baby, there are healthy essentials that can be kept on hand to aid in your child’s care and wellness. And some of our favorites can be found right in the aisles of your local health foods or grocery store!
Toddlers that are eating solid foods and drinking water can stay hydrated with water or by sipping on fresh juices packed with organic fruits and veggies and soothed with spoonfuls of warm broth. Look to whole food meals made with immune-boosting ingredients. If you’re breastfeeding, try adding these tips into your own care routine to give your own body a boost. Be sure to check with your pediatrician if you have any questions about certain ingredients or foods.
Now that you’ve reset your baby or toddler’s body from the inside-out (and hopefully your own, too!), it’s time to rethink your medicine cabinet in the same way. I recently dumped our entire medicine cabinet out onto the floor and went through each product one by one checking ingredients to create a go-to stash of only the best and healthiest items.
It can be really difficult to decipher today’s health aisles. My eyes often cross when faced with terms like “natural” versus “all-natural.” Our best tip, since there is no current governing body on the term natural, is to read ingredient labels and to check with your child’s pediatrician. I personally find comfort in products that are made from only ingredients that I know and recognize and have found that the Maty’s line of all natural baby and children’s health products meet our requirements time and time again.
One of my favorite soothing products for any sign of a cold is Maty’s All Natural Baby Chest Rub. Since it can be used on babies as young as three months old, I remember being so excited to provide another level of comfort to my baby as she drifted off to sleep. Now in the toddler stage, at any sign of a sniffle, I am reaching for this fresh jar of relief! Since Maty’s Baby Chest Rub is petroleum- and menthol-free and made of ingredients like sunflower and coconut oil, vitamin E and essential oils including lavender, dill weed, coriander, eucalyptus and chamomile, I feel comfortable applying it to my child’s chest and rubbing it into the soles of her feet.
As I gear up for this year’s cold and flu season, I am feeling more prepared than ever to fight those icky sick feelings while providing comfort to my sweet baby. In partnership with your pediatrician, do your research on healthy, safe and all-natural treatments that will soothe your child. As you rebuild your own arsenal to prepare for cold and flu season, be sure to check out Matys All Natural Health products.
