Calling all mermaids! You’re definitely going to want to swim on over to this enchanted underwater celebration. We had so much fun pulling together the elements of our new Let’s Be Mermaids party collection. Sea shells, starfish and ocean bubbles in shades of iridescent aqua and lavender will definitely have your little mermaids flipping their tails at this mermaid party.
The minute we saw this invitation from Minted, we knew we had to add a mermaid party collection to our shop. The color scheme was perfect, but what really had us was the illustrated mermaid wearing a part hat! Can you get any cuter?!
We each have a daughter, and if you have girls too, you know that mermaids are super popular right now. From mermaid swim tails, to bed sheets and luggage—they’re everywhere and we’re loving it. It’s such a fun, summer party theme that works across age groups and will satisfy your Ariel-loving child without looking cartoon-ish.
The balloon garland is what really makes this party special. We created a custom “Under the Sea” mix of pearl mint green, teal and lavender balloons. Do not be intimidated at the idea of creating this garland. It’s really simple and anyone can do it, regardless of your craftiness level. Trust us! The kit comes with a clear plastic decorating strip that gives you the garland “template,” holding up to 12 latex balloons per foot. You simply fill each balloon using the included hand air pump, and pull the knot ends of inflated balloons through the evenly spaced holes and trim the strip to the right length.
We draped the balloon garland across a wooden backdrop that we covered in mint green fabric. In front of the backdrop, we hung this adorable Let’s Be Mermaids garland. We used a tissue tassel garland in front of the dessert table and floated this sweet mermaid balloon.
Let’s talk about dessert. If you time the party right, you don’t have to serve food and can stick to making the sweets table extra special. We always include a cake, cupcakes and sugar cookies to match the party theme.
This cake is one of our favorites and uses varying colors of fondant circles to give a mermaid scales effect. If this is beyond your cake decorating skill level (and we totally get it), you can take a photo to your local bakery and they should be able to assist! We finished it off with this darling mermaid cake topper.
We used aqua frosting for the cupcakes, stuck them in lavender and aqua wrappers and added mermaid, starfish and shell toppers.
Our mom creates all of the sweets for our parties, and when she showed us these perfect mermaid tail sugar cookies, we about died! Did you know we offer a cookie kit for each of our party collections? The Let’s Be Mermaids kit includes a mermaid tail cookie cutter, cellophane bags, satin ribbon in aqua and lavender, and our mom’s famous sugar cookie recipe card—all of the essentials for making and packaging mermaid tail cookies. And again, if it’s out of your comfort zone, take it to the bakery!
While of course mermaids swim, the neat thing about this party is that it doesn’t have to be held at the pool. There are enough fun mermaid-related crafts and activities that you can still do this party theme and keep kiddos entertained without swimming. Here are some ideas.
Sand Art. This is a great activity for a mermaid party! Purchase different colors of sand from your local craft store along with small, plastic corked bottles or purchase one of these sand art kits. Have your party guests use funnels to fill their bottles, layering different colors of sand in beautiful patterns. They will love it!
Mermaid Treasure Hunt. Divide guests into pairs and send them on a scavenger hunt around a designated area for mermaid related items such as shells, starfish, gold coins, etc. The first team to find all of the items wins! For younger children, fill a small wading pool with play sand, add some sand tools, and bury plastic sea creatures, beaded necklaces and plastic coins for them to dig and find. It will be a hit!
Mermaid Shell Necklace. Every mermaid needs a little under-the-sea bling. Party guests will have so much fun crafting glitter shell necklaces. For this activity, you will need small seashells with holes in the top, glitter glue, string, paint brushes and pony beads. Have guests paint the shells with glitter glue and let dry. Then they can string the shells and beads onto necklace.
We hope we have given you a spark of inspiration for your own magical mermaid celebrations. Happy summer!
