I’ve been hard at work on a new nursery design, and my client wanted to make sure that there is storage for books somewhere in the room. Book storage is always a priority, but it can be difficult to figure out the best way to use the space. Maybe you don’t have room for a full size bookcase, or maybe you just want to step outside of the box a little. I’ve put together some of my favorite types of book storage in all shapes and sizes.
If you do have room for a bookcase, one of my favorites is the Mini Library from Oeuf. It has such clean lines and it’s low to the ground, so you can still use the wall above for a nice piece of statement art, or even additional wall shelves if you’re really tight on storage. I also love the two cabinet doors to hide away those few things you might not want to display.
On the other hand, if you don’t have room for any piece of furniture that sits on the floor, wall shelves are always a great option. Wall ledges in particular are great because they don’t stick out from the wall very far. I love this acrylic set by James Reese Baby—they are practically invisible! If you’re short on space, keeping things light and open always helps the room feel larger, so acrylic is a great option.
If you want to think outside of the box a little, this storage bench by ducduc is such a fun way to add extra seating to your space while also incorporating book storage. The cubbies are open for display, or they can be filled with bins or boxes. If you don’t like the open display look, there are plenty of options for storage benches that hinge closed at the top.
If you really want a showcase piece, you can opt for a modular storage piece like this one from Kalon Studios. I used this piece in J.R. Martinez’s nursery almost five years ago, and it is so timeless that it will always be in style. A piece like this can also be transitioned into other uses down the line, or the boxes can be separated and used in other areas of the home. Talk about multi-purpose!
For the nursery I’m working on right now, there is space for a bookcase, but I’m leaning towards book ledges. They are a good looking and inexpensive option, and they take up less floor space leaving more space for play!
