This playroom reveal has been a long time coming. We moved into a new home a couple of years ago, and I was so excited to design this space, especially since I was able to collaborate with The Land of Nod! I have three kiddos, and it has always been important to me to have a space in which the kids can play, explore, relax and learn—and it has to be colorful! I knew that the loft area in my home would be assigned to my littles, and having a multifunctional space was super important for my family. So without further ado, here is my colorful boho playroom.
When designing any space, it is always a good idea to have a jumping off point that you use as your inspiration. When I laid eyes on this dreamy Casablanca Rug, it was love at first sight! The colors, the texture—EVERYTHING about it is perfect for this space. I love color, and I’m not afraid to use it.
I’d been eyeing this Hello Pillow and knew that would be the next item I’d use to build the color palette for the space.
I used the rug to define the center of the space. We already had a neutral gray sofa that was perfect for family movie nights and maybe a quick afternoon snooze. So I filled it up with colorful, comfy pillows and that darling Hello pillow is the perfect finishing touch that ties it all together.
The wall behind the sofa came next. I really wanted to add interest to the main wall, so I opted to create my version of a plank wall (I’ll be sharing the DIY soon!). I definitely have a love for gallery walls, and this cacti print was the first piece I used to build the theme.
One of my goals in designing the playroom was to have defined areas, and this next area is all about reading. I used some storage cubicles to create a reading nook, and the Take Five Wall Bin is the perfect storage solution for our little library. The boys use this wall bin to hold the books they are currently reading or have checked out from our local library so they don’t get mixed in with the rest of our books.
The wall bin also allows me to organize books by reading level since all three of my boys are at different stages of learning how to read.
The Mixed Media Table Lamp is the perfect color for this quaint corner, and it casts just the right amount of light for a nighttime reading session.
The next area that was important for the space was an area to play. I paired the black and white striped teepee with the hot pink floor cushion to create a perfect corner for a little imaginative play. When the teepee arrived, my boys went nuts! Many make-believe camping trips and star-gazing sessions have taken place so far, and I can’t wait to see what else they dream up! One zone that I didn’t include in this space is an area for art—I decided to keep that contained to their under-the-stairs homework/art closet.
I loved bringing in some natural finishes and textures, and this geometric table lamp is the perfect touch!
I love how it looks against the DIY plank wall!
When designing a playroom, I think it is important to create a space that will grow with your kids. My boys are four, six and eight, and there are specific zones that appeal to their individual interests. It is also a good idea to design with a theme that can grow with them.
Bringing in bright, playful colors and lots of texture was the goal, and I think it all came together amazingly well with a few awesome pieces from The Land of Nod! This is a space that not only appeals to my boys, but that the whole family can enjoy too!
Don’t forget to be on the lookout, because I’ll be sharing the plank wall tutorial, plus a few other DIY projects from this space that you’re not going to want to miss!

They were DIY made by Rebecca. You could get a similar look with inexpensive white curtains and pom pom trim in a variety of colors. Good luck with your design!
