Here’s one Father’s Day craft we know both Dad and your kids will love. Do you remember Shrinky Dinks from when you were little? They were so fun! Well, they make blank Shrinky Dink sheets now that you can use to create your own projects with. PN contributor Hayley, of Grey House Harbor, created the most adorable DIY handprint keychain on her own blog for her kids to give to their dad this year.
Materials: Shrinky Dink Plastic Sheets, Key Ring, Jump Rings, Gloss Acrylic Paint, Gloss Mod Podge
Aren’t those tiny handprints just the sweetest? And your kids will love watching their handprints magically shrink in the oven.

I used gloss paint to do the handprints, but after it is baked it is bubbly. What am I doing wrong? FYI.. I did not use a lot of paint on their hands.

Just a normal sized hole punch. The hole also shrinks in the oven, so you don’t want to start out too small.

Juanita I just did this today with the girls I nanny. Took one minute to make each hand print. Paint took about an hour to dry. I sat it in a sunny window to speed it up. Then I cut them out, baked them for 2 minutes. They were cooled off in about 5 minutes. Modge Podged them and that was dry in about an hour. Popped on the rings and was done. Super easy.
How long does this project take start to finish. How long does it take paint to dry? How long does it take glossy modge podge to dry?

Jen – Coating the painted areas with modpodge after it shrinks (as suggested in the full tutorial) definitely helps to make the handprint water resistant… but I wouldn’t go tossing them in the tub. :)
is the paint permanent on there or is there a threat of it coming off if it gets wet?

I am seeing different sites/different methods for doing this. Does anyone know if paint/mod podge or ink pad/embossing powder works better?? Thanks.

Hi Lizz, You have to seal the paint after it dries. If you click through to Grey House Harbor’s tutorial, you’ll see that she recommends Modge Podge for that step.
What kind of paint am I supposed to use I heve tried acrylic and the paint just dusts off kinda like chalk

Ferko – We did a version with a friend’s 10-mo-old and it turned out super cute! Hardest part is getting their wiggly fingers to be still long enough to get a good print. Might take a few tries, but you definitely can do it with a 1-yr-old!
I don’t think so. It will just make a smaller key chain. They shrink to one third their original size. Have fun!
