What about Classic Sheepskins makes you most proud?
Our products are made in New Zealand! We proudly carry the New Zealand-made certificate and have the honor of being able to add the logo to all of our products. New Zealand-made not only means that we are creating local jobs and supporting the community, but it also gives the customer so many reassurances. To have a New Zealand-made product, you have captured what makes the country special. This is a country that has fair labor laws, regulates to ensure sustainable production, is environmentally friendly and has a high standard of business ethics.
We’re also proud of our ability to sell a product that is highly labour intensive at a great price without outsourcing cheap labour because that is a rarity these days. We have a skilled staff, and that greatly helps to improve the finish of our products. With most processes done by hand, we ensure quality control, delivering a superior sustainable product to our customers.
What do you think people might not know about Classic Sheepskins that you’d like to share?
Classic Sheepskins has been New Zealand owned and operated for over 40 years. Started in 1969, one of the original owners is still in charge today, with his son playing an active role in the running of the business. Classic Sheepskins is all about supporting the local community by creating jobs, contributing to local charity and offering a sustainable product that is not produced with any detrimental effects to people or the environment.
What advice do you have for parents when curating a nursery? Any nursery must-haves?
Don’t forget to add warmth and texture to your nursery. It only takes one or two pieces, but the difference is huge! Our nursery must-have has always been a sheepskin. In New Zealand, it’s common for most children to have been brought up with a sheepskin in the nursery. Not only does it bring a unique design piece to a room, but the practical benefits are brilliant. A study in Germany found a connection between lying on a sheepskin as a baby and a decreased risk of childhood asthma and other respiratory problems. A Classic Sheepskin is machine washable, and our Infant Care Rugs are also sanitized. This sanitation process will stop the build up of bacteria, mildew and any other germs as it creates a preventive layer across the fiber. Because it’s a natural fiber that is very light and allows air to circulate, a sheepskin is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It’s also naturally soothing and has been used for centuries for its calming and nurturing effects.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Classic Sheepskins take its inspiration from the New Zealand landscape. It’s this landscape that shapes our product and produces our raw materials. Without it, we wouldn’t have a business, so what better place to gain inspiration? We allow Mother Nature to do as much of the designing as possible, and we step in only to craft and deliver a beautiful product. Keeping our products as natural as possible lets the results show themselves. Quality is never lost, and uniform uniqueness becomes a special part.
Tell us your motto.
In a world full of poor quality and cheap imitations, it’s heartening to know that at Classic Sheepskins, we guarantee that we offer only the finest natural New Zealand sheepskin products available. The whole process is completed onsite in New Zealand ensuring the highest quality and workmanship.
