DIY: “Do More With Less” Roller Shade + Giveaway

Get ready for a big, big giveaway! However before I get to the goods, I want to share with you an easy DIY in this multi-tasking, high paced, crazy techy world. Sometimes simple is just plain better and it’s always great to find ways to “do more with less”. In this case, I am referring to the newly re-purposed roller shades in my son’s nursery. It’s amazing what only two yards of fabric, ordinary packing tape and an dirty old roller shade can accomplish.

Fabric (2 yards should suffice most standard shades)

Packing Tape

Safety Pins

Roller Shade

Hemming Tape  & Iron (optional)

1. Extend your rollar shade and lay your fabric on top. Should your fabric extend beyond the width of your shade, simply use hemming tape to fold and iron the edges. The edge of the fabric should be aligned with the sides of shade, no more or no less.

2. Carefully tape the top of your fabric to the top of the bar on the shade. Ensure a smooth fit and layer the tape for a secure hold.

3. Cut the fabric 1-inch below the length of the roller shade.

4. Remove the existing bar from the bottom of the shade.

5. Hang the roller shade above the window so the fabric falls naturally.

6. Fold the fabric over the bottom of the shade material and secure fabric to shade evenly with safety pins across the shade.

7. Re-attach the shade bar by sliding it over the safety pin.

Easy enough, right? Well, we want to prove our point on how you can “do more with less” with the help of the new Windows 7 phone. While it won’t re-furbish your old roller shade, it will definitely simplify your busy life allowing you to use the time you typically spend waiting for your blackberry to load more wisely. We are so convinced that you’ll be impressed, we’re offering one lucky PN reader a Windows 7 phone of your own.

WIN IT! Microsoft is giving away their new, amazing Windows Phone 7 to one lucky Project Nursery reader – a $499 value! I love roller shade makeovers! Cottage Living (RIP) did a feature forever ago with simple roller shade makeovers, using things like wallpaper, gaffer’s tape, or even stencils.

Love the new rollershades! Great fabric choice! I would love to win the phone–my husband’s phone is from the ice age, but he refuses to get a new one. This would help the cause!

Hi, great post and very creative (and easy) ~ thanks for sharing! I could totally use this phone (for my husband). Would make a GREAT Christmas Gift for him as he needs a new {hi-tech} phone! ~Margaret

I love how easy it is to make old boring roller shades look hip and up to date! Thanks for this one makeover tip :)

  9. 9

Post-its!! I write myself reminders all of over the house. They are also great for leaving cute notes for your husband or textbook page markers.

A tip for doing more with less for the holidays:

Don’t forget to spend a little something for those who can’t spend – whether it is adopting a family for a holiday or buying something small for a toy drive. When I was little, I was the recipient of a secret toys-for-tots gift (I had no idea where it came from, it was left at my doorstep), and it helped me continue believing in Santa although my family was not able to afford gifts that year!

I need this phone! My current smartphone doesn’t make good calls. The apps are cool, but it needs to be a phone too!

  13. 13

Hey! I’ve been looking at doing just this in our spare room! Thanks for the tutorial!
(And thanks for the chance to win the phone – how cool!)

  14. 14

I want this phone because my current phone is the soooo old and very very basic. It doesn’t have a camera on it and can’t receive picture texts either.

  15. 15

More with less: my life goal! I know it’s working when my mom tells me my house is always “so tidy and clean”! Quite an accomplishment with a very busy almost-2 year old!

  16. 16
  17. 17

It’s funny (ironic) you posted this roller shade diy, I attempted it once and RUINED the whole thing. I’ll try it again! The phone is suppose to do all sorts of good things…and it’s been getting awesome reviews.

I WOULD LOVE A NEW PHONE :) I do not have roller shades, but I take a fairly inexpensive poster frame either (<10 dollars) and print 50 free pictures at Shutterfly and I make collages mixing black and white photos of my family and color ones of new additions to the family. It brightens up any room

You know when you get pregnant you end up forgetting or misplacing things well I have sever mommy brain after having a second kid that I know leave lists of things that I need to do or that I like because after running after my kiddos I too exhausted to remember anything else which brings me to the phone and why I would love to win it. We just went to a wedding in Arizona and lucky me I lost my phone there and didnt realize until we were half way back to California. So yes I would love a new phone that I wont lose and that can tidy up my lists and keep them in one spot. ;)

  30. 30

Thank you for the roller shade tutorial! We currently have no-cord cellular shades in my daughter’s room and they do NOT block enough light for her naps. I hate standard roller shades but this is something I can totally do and would look great in her room!

And winning the phone would be amazing – my husband is in need of a new phone for his business!

Nice post as always. Ooooohh…a windows phone. I can definitely do more with less with that phone.

  33. 33

I could do more with less by buying a lot of multifuncational furniture and using rooms like my dining room for more than it is meant for i.e. playroom currently.
Would love the phone why? because I don’t own one right now.

One of my favorite more with less tips: When my son gets a stain on the front of a nice tee, I cut a monster or other creature out of fleece or an old tee. I’ll sew it over the stain and my son has another cute shirt to wear. It really does look cute. My favorite was a shark I made out of an old gray tee. I stitched on the words, “I Bite”.

love to have a new phone mine has seen better days. in this economy you have to do more with less anywhere and time you can such as always buy on sale. When you are on a limited budget, you have to be frugal. One of the tactics large families utilize is consistently buying on sale. Impulse purchases can hurt in more way than one. Plan purchases in advance, and wait for sales. With patience, you can maximize your buying power.

First of all I really really want this phone…I dont have a cell phone right now because of some financial problems:(

More with less is my middle name. I try and make things instead of buying them…such as sewing my own reusable zip lock bags, homemade gifts for people, recreating things I see for decorating my house (when I cant afford the actual piece I set my eye on)…its more fun that way!!!

I bought an inexpensive piece of red fabric with white dots to use as a tablecloth. Cheaper than a tablecloth, and it will also work for Valentine’s Day and 4th of July.

The secret to do more with less is all about recycling and up-cycling. There are so many things around the house that would avoid next years garage sale or freshen up your style if you reuse them. There are countless example that make home improvement a lot cheaper and reduce collecting or throwing out so much stuff. Keep an eye out. After you see a neat idea, take a walk around the house and in the garage… there are resources everywhere for the creative.

cardboard, plain ol cardboard has always helped me. fold them into boxes, use as a make shift table, line areas for crafts. always works for me :)

  120. 120

With phone like this that has pretty much everything is what everyone needs or at least me, so I can stop using a pocket calendar, to keep up with or lives and appoitments, and no more coupons around my purse since you could download them and retails can scan them from the phone…awesome!

  121. 121

I can’t stress enough how important it is to declutter. Less stuff equals peace of mind, less time dusting, it’s good for your health, and on and on. Get rid of your junk, people!

  122. 122

I really want this phone to replace my horribly outdated and severely cracked Blackberry. I have to take out the battery and put the sim card back in place about 3 times a day – I’ve tried every way that I can think of to fix it, but nothing seem to help. So annoying! I’m a big fan of solving problems with simple solutions, I just wish it would work for my current phone.

Since it is the holiday season, I was able to get one of those smaller gorgeous Christmas trees (you know like the ones that they decorate in dept. stores and are so lovely and full, but you can’t actually buy them?) last year for free, only problem was that it didn’t have a stand at the bottom, but only had a very short wired stem at the bottom that wouldn’t support its weight. Couldn’t find a stand that would work for it! I was bound and determined to find anything at all that could make it usable, so I picked a basket that I had around the house and filled it with some broken plate pieces that I had laying around from my mosaic making days and then stuck the tree in, added glue to the stem and covered and glued the top of the basket with holiday fabric, making it fully usable and sturdy. It may sound pretty lame, but I think it is gorgeous and will be sitting on top of a table that I have in the corner of the dining room this holiday season. Just something that I was able to do with a tree that a store was going to throw away and my own goodies that I had around the house!

Thanks so much for the chance!

  123. 123

I could do more with less on this phone because you have apps that can save you time and money, music, a phone – all in one! Love love this idea.
I’d also really like to win it because I think it’s an awesome phone and love to be up to date on the newest phones. As a mom juggling kids, work, and school, I could really use something to keep me more organized.
Thanks for such a fabulous giveaway!

  124. 124

This may not be exactly what you had in mind but I have found I can do so much more for my health by eating less! I can eat smaller portions (healthier food of course) and be able to be healthier and ultimately, weigh less. There is nothing more rewarding you can do for yourself and your health than weighing less!!!

I would love this phone to replace my outdated ginormous phone. I do more with less by decluttering my items. I realized I don’t need things I thought I did and then I thrift shop…it is amazing the bargains I find. Others feels the same as I so I have found everything. I use coupons, only shop sales and have become a huge DIYer.

  128. 128

I want this phone because my phone barely works! Half the buttons stick so its hard to text. For instance my “l” doesn’t work and the other day I sent a text asking someone to meet me in “public” and it sent as meet me in “pubic” Not good…

Our budget doesn’t allow us to go out to eat as often as we used to, do now my daughter and I have “gourmet” night- we pick out a fancy recipe, make it together, and have a special evening. It’s usually a lot better than restaurant food! There is also the added bonus that it’s really fun to try new recipes and techniques.

  131. 131

  137. 137

Doing more with less can have a fantastic outcome when you’re talking about crafting. I knit, so I have *tons* of leftover scraps from various projects. Michael’s has a donation basket for Warm Up America squares, either knit or crochet, so every year I knit a bunch up. Then there is a ‘joining party’, where the accumulated squares are put together into blankets. I have made many new friends piecing together blankets.

Also, I NEED that phone because I just started my blog, and I would love to be able to have internet on the go! Having the Windows 7 phone would make me feel so cool!

We do more with less by periodically holding garage sales to help us de-clutter. We then use the proceeds to buy the whole family dinner at a nice restaurant!

  173. 173

I do more with less by cooking dinner and staying home to eat. The family gets to spend time together cooking, eating together and cleaning up. This cost less than going out, but our family gets a lot more out of it.

  174. 174
  175. 175

So I’m out of town this weekend, and had to bring my laptop, which is obviously no problem. What sucked was all of the witty thoughts that popped into my head on my 10 hour drive that I couldn’t immediately tweet of FB. I needz a smart phone!

  197. 197

This school teacher is way out in the country – current cell phone doesn’t have coverage (trying to do my best with LESS). Smart phone could allow me *and* my kids a link to the big world.

  198. 198

As a teacher in a low income school, I am often forced to do more with less. I honestly believe that this phone can help me both at work as well as at home. It’s got so many more applications than I can have on my old brick phone. If I don’t win, don’t worry, the brick phone still works as long as I don’t leave the house with it.

My husband will kill me for saying this, but he does more with less by owning only gray socks. Seriously. He bought 30 identical pairs of gray socks. Whenever one gets a hole in it, he still has umpteen zillion other matches for it, so he doesn’t have to chuck the whole pair. And yes, he is that cheap. (Which is why I’d like to win a new phone and not buy one!)

  201. 201

I would love to win this phone. We do more with less at the grocery store. I check the ads for what is on sale. I stock up on items that are on sale. I use coupons, and buy generic.

  202. 202

I’ve always wanted a smartphone and when I learned about the different WP7 models; I picked the HTC HD7. I can’t believe it is this one that Microsoft is giving away! It would be awesome to win it because I cannot afford it :( Good luck everyone :)

  208. 208

  211. 211

I would like to win the Windows 7 phone because I need the features of a smartphone but they are all more than a bit out of my price range. This phone looks great.

  212. 212

I am almost the last person I know that doesn’t have a smart phon, Luddites excepted, of course. While keeping up with the Jones’s doesn’t interest me much, updating my FB from the bank does!

  213. 213

I do more with less money for Christmas gifts. All year I take surveys that pay in gift cards. I will be purchasing a $99 Cuisinart Food Processor for my best friend this year that comes with free shipping. I won’t pay a dime for it, and I still have a bit of Amazon cash left over.

  215. 215

I do more for less at the grocery store by checking sale ads, using coupons, stocking up on what is on sale, and buying generic on what is not. I also try not to buy anything that doesn’t deliver some nutrition bang for its buck.

  216. 216

With working and the holidays I need something that makes my life run smoother right now (and the rest of the year too).

  217. 217

Doing more with less sometimes means reusing grocery bags, or buying the recyclable types and using those. Saves the environment and saves the grocery stores money, which in turn saves you money.

  218. 218

Yea!!!!! Only one more day then this incredible phone to make daily task easier will be given away.

  219. 219

How to do more with less? I have in my own house a soda vending machine, when I feel like drinking one, I buy one. At the end of certain period

of time, I open the vending machine to recollect my profit!!!

  231. 231

This would be so awesome to win. I am in desperate need of a new phone. My current phone does have a QWERTY keyboard nor does it have a camera. Please help me out.

  232. 232

I really like keeping notebooks around for ideas. It doesnt cost much and it helps me later on when I am bored or uninspired to give me new ideas

  233. 233
  234. 234

I do more with less buy spending a good part of my Sunday going through all the local ad papers, writing a list of which store has the best deals on each item, going online to see if I can find coupons for those items, or if I already have them in my coupon organizer. I then map out my route from store to store to see how I can save the most time and gas and then head out. It takes some time and planning, but I usually save quite a bit. I need the phone because no matter how much more I do with less, it does not leave any extra money for mommy to upgrade her old decrepit phone. I love your favorite things list, I especially love the My charm necklace, that is beautiful. I want one now.

  235. 235

I do more with less by shopping at discount clothing stores such as Ross and Marshalls. They carry name brand clothing at a cheaper price. I get so excited over the deals I find there and can honestly say those stores are my favorite to shop.

  236. 236

There has to be an app for finding your car in a parking lot.. Doesn’t there? How much time would that save me over the course of a year? Think of what I could do with that time!!

  237. 237

We do more with less by finishing all our holiday shopping waaay before the season gets underway. That way, we aren’t caught up in holiday mania or retail marketing when the gifts are being purchased, and we don’t spend as much money.

  238. 238

I am not super crafty, but the one time of year I really go all out is at Halloween. I can’t see spending a bunch of money on a costume for one day, that doesn’t even look amazing. I search the house for things that would be reusable in a costume, and end up with some amazing costumes at half the price, that go on to win prizes in the costume judging contests.

  239. 239

We were going to buy a new front door as both of us disliked the one we had, but in the meantime, I decided to paint it, just so that it would look a little bit better. So I painted it a beautiful brick red, which my SO loved so much that he decided to put brass hardware and a brass kick plate on it. That looked so great that he actually took down the old green shutters and put up black ones like I had always wanted, and then painted the mailbox. For under $200 we re-did the whole look of the front of our house.

  240. 240

You can always do Less is More with small children. They aren’t worldly yet. You don’t need to throw huge birthday parties for a two-year old. My kids know that on their birthday it is a small family affair and it’s more about individual attention and praise than “things/gifts”. Start when they’re young.

Exactly what I asked Santa to bring me ‘this Christmas!

  250. 250

We do more with less by shopping yard sales and consignment stores. Another great idea is Freecycle. I scored enough yarn to knit an afghan just because someone no longer wanted it.

  251. 251

I would love to win this phone because I currently own two Zunes and would like another one. I also currently own a Windows cell phone, an old one, and it is starting to show wear — cracked screen!

  252. 252
  253. 253

One of our toughest moments was combining two households.
But fortunately everyone gets along really well. We took our large porch and turned it into another bedroom, bought bunkbeds and extra dressers as well as a lot of organizational products from Ikea so that everyone still has their own individual space.

  254. 254

I do more with less because I am great at making money out of nothing! I find old items at garage sales and sell them on ebay for a profit…I do searches online to earn amazon gift cards…and I use online coupon codes to get free shipping and even save a percentage of the final cost!

  258. 258
  259. 259
  260. 260

I used to check my email through a browser; a few months ago I started using an email client. Now I can check all my email accounts at the same time! That’s doing more with less!

  261. 261
  262. 262

Ok, so I want this phone because…my current phone is really a joke. Old and zero helpful features. I work a full time job that requires me to be available on my personal cell phone 24/7 — bad consequences if they can’t reach me, most of the time when they call I need to get web email access asap…which has involved borrowing a friends computer, stopping by the library, carrying a laptop and an aircard everywhere I go, etc. When you’re a single mom juggling three kids out for the day…it’s really no fun to try to juggle your phone while holding the silly old battery in place so it doesn’t fall out and then telling them…pack up! I need to get to a computer!

So, I’d like the phone to make my life a little easier, and make the off-hours work a little (ok, a LOT) easier. :)

  263. 263

I really, really want this phone so I can gift it to my daughter for Christmas. She goes to college, makes good grades, works part-time, and is very considerate of me.
    [email protected]

  264. 264

We live on one income which means using coupons, buying store brands and buying clothes at consighment stores. It’s worth living frugaly so I can stay home with our children. We rarely eat out unless we have a BOGO coupon.

  265. 265

My phone is over ten years old. I really would like to have a smart phone so I could keep up with all the people I have been neglecting.

  266. 266

I do more with less by cooking from scratch. It’s much cheaper and less expensive too. I saw this phone at BlogHer this summer and fell in love it it. I reallllly want it !

  267. 267

Wow! This giveaway came at the perfect time…would be overjoyed to win. Have had a very basic Virgin Mobile pay as you go phone and it was cheap and now the battery is dead. I really need a GOOD phone! Have to have one for emergencies when travelling to visit my daughter & granddaughters out of state…need to call AAA in case of an emergency.

  268. 268

Doing more with less could be decorating the christmas tree as a family. More work done in less time, and lots of family time together.

  269. 269

I really, really, really want this phone because I have had the same phone (a samsung flip phone) for 4 years and it it barely holding together. Moreover, the Windows 7phone sounds amazing!

  270. 270

  272. 272
  273. 273

I do more homework with less phone time now that I’ve lost my phone…! It is seriously gone. 2 days now. So winning this giveaway would definitely help me out! So don’t you want to…? Help a sista’ out!

  274. 274

I do more with less by making homemade pizza every Friday night instead of getting take-out. Sure, it would be a lot easier to get delivery pizza, but I save a lot of money making it from scratch and it tastes great, too! My family feels the love which is an added bonus.

  275. 275

I do more with less everyday…I currently use a pay as you go phone strictly “in case of emergency”…it does not surf the net, it does not take pictures, in fact it does barely anything…so no Facebook or twitter from the mobile, certainly no PN –I KNOW THAT I LIVE IN THE DARK AGES!! I just cannot spend money on myself for a luxury that most others consider a necessity. This is why I would love a new phone that could do everything and FAST!
