Design Reveal: Connect the Dots

Shared rooms have become a popular subject over here at Project Nursery and we have received many requests for ideas and inspiration. I too have been paying extra attention to these requests because someday, probably sooner then I think, I may also need to “double up” and put my daughter and son together in one room in order to create space for another little being. (No news, just forethought!) Rachael, mother of son Jasper and new baby girl Amelie, was in a bit of a time crunch to put together a gender neutral space before her newest arrived on the scene. She wanted it to feel right for both a boy and girl and we think she did a great job of keeping the feel of the room consistent while still creating separate spaces within the room. Here is how she did it:

What was your inspiration for the room?
My inspiration for their room came from websites like Project Nursery and many, many hours spent sifting through design magazines. I needed to find an economical way to squeeze both of my children into one room, while not being to gender-centric. I love contemporary, modern design, but my bank account doesn’t. I had to use what I had already in the room which was the dresser and armoire from Pier 1. I had to find a crib that somehow went with those pieces, plus at the time the only crib I liked was the Oeuf and it was way out of my budget.

What best describes your style?
Eclectic, modern, contemporary.

Share with us choice of paint colors, furniture, art, DIY, tips, etc.
The blue color was already in the room from when we bought the house, but it was a very nice blue so I kept it when Jasper was born. I considered painting the walls a nice bright green when Amelie came along, but never got around to it. The white circles on the wall I hand painted. I traced different paint can lids to get perfect circles. The first coat of paint was kind of see-through. I thought I would add a second coat, but I ended up liking it the way it came out. I then added the colored wall decals from Modern Seed. I put the green and blue dots on his side of the room. On her side of the room I put the green and pink dots.

What is your favorite item(s) in the room?
My favorite things in the room are the bedding from Land of Nod in both the boy version and the girl version, and the wall art.
