Knox’s Modern Forest Nursery

When we found out we were having our second boy, I immediately started doing searches for nursery theme ideas. I had already done a safari themed nursery for my oldest that I loved and wanted our new baby to have something special of his own. For both boys, the idea was to get furniture that would grow with them and a design that could be tweaked as they moved into toddlers without redoing the whole space. I decided on a “modern forest” theme for Knox. I wanted something that felt clean and peaceful, but also inviting with touches of playfulness. I love the look of a black and white nursery, and chose to add touches of cognac and forest green for some warmth. After putting together an inspiration board, I started looking for pieces that I felt went with the theme. There aren’t a lot of places to shop in person where I live, so I did most of my shopping online. I decided on the main furniture first and then filled in the accent pieces and décor after that. Having the big stuff in the room helped me feel out where things should go and what the space still needed. It took a few tries and exchanging things in and out, but I love the end result and hope Knox will too!

Boho Pink Woodland Nursery

It was so lovely to work in this old Toronto home as I was able to accentuate unique features that give the space character — like vertical wall paneling, decorative air vent covers and painted shiplap inside the closet. Typically, we would have wallpapered the feature wall adjacent to the window; however, we decided to leave the wall paneling as is and created a focal point next to it with wallpaper and a hanging felted swan above a white and natural crib. Sometimes an atypical room layout can actually work to your advantage as it feels a bit more distinct to the space you’re working with!
To draw the eye up, we installed a rattan and linen pendant and switched out the previous window treatments with an antique brass curtain rod and blackout curtain panels installed as high to the ceiling as possible. We filled the space with beautiful textural elements like a pink faux sherling armchair, rattan mirror and doll bed, wool blanket, acrylic book ledges and fluted side table. To play with various patterns against the whimsical woodland wallpaper, we sourced a blush floral crib sheet, star cushion and floral art print. Don’t be scared to mix patterns — this can really bring depth to an overall room design. We didn’t want the space to feel too matchy matchy, so we mixed in blush pink tones with sage and olive greens, soft blues and even some brighter pops of yellow. The colour story really helps to carry the eye around the space.
It was important for my clients to maximize the available floor space for play, so instead of a large dresser we opted for an open oak bookcase to display books and toys and added a functional (and oh so cute) reading corner. I was also tasked to make the most of their tiny closet, so we found a small shelf with rattan drawers and used other various bins to keep clothes divided and neatly categorized.
There is no shortage of sweetness in this whimsical woodland nursery; from colour coordinated book selections, to specialty wooden ice cream toys and dolls… magic awaits!

Scandinavian Woodland Nursery

Our house is surrounded by woodland and trees so I wanted our son’s nursery to showcase the animals he would see every day. I knew I wanted woodland themed.
I teamed up with Elisabeth from Etsy E Design shop Crowning Joie Designs. Elisabeth worked with me to bring my vision for a woodland themed nursery to life. I had seen Cedar Tree wallpaper on Project Nursery website early on in my pregnancy and LOVED it. This was our starting point/ inspiration and it went from there! the final result is a beautiful, mid century/ modern /Scandinavian /woodland themed nursery and its the nursery of my dreams!
My tips and advice are:
1. invest in affordable design help like Crowning Joie, it is a great idea to do this before you start to spend money… it really helps to have expertise, direction and insight for your vision, an Etsy shop like Crowning Joie is an easy, affordable way to do it. My final months of pregnancy and labour happened during Covid 19 Quarantine so I couldn’t get out and shop. An Online shopping list was key when I couldn’t go out and browse the shops.
2. Start with an item that you love and let everything else flow from there!
My little boy arrived in May and LOVES his room, especially the wallpaper!

Modern Bear Woodland Nursery

I am so excited to present our Modern Bear Woodland Nursery! This project is very special as it is for our second baby, this time a boy! I knew I wanted to use a deep dark navy blue, hunter green, gray and a touch of leather and wood. The jumping off point was definitely the large bear print and the idea of creating a warm cocoon like feeling to cuddle our newborn. I knew incorporating a large scale tree art print was also a must because being surrounded by nature is so grounding. The furniture has a modern flare which creates a bit of an edge and will be easy to use and live with for a long while. I also chose a crib that could transition into a toddler bed and a dresser with regular size drawers to accommodate a growing wardrobe. Plants and minimal toys were also used on purpose to create a clean, fresh and calm environment. When creating a nursery that will easily transition to a toddler and big kid room remember to pick furniture that grows, a rocker that can remain in the room or easily fit with your other furniture, storage and multiple lighting options. Art and colour is also a fun way to incorporate personality to set the mood and have some fun. I hope you enjoy the tour!

Woodland Nursery

I was inspired by woodland animals. I wanted gender neutral but this does lean more boy. I wanted soft soothing colors so no over stimulation. My goal was to provide a fun nursery that could grow with him and who doesn’t love animals? The brown zebra rug added a touch of whimsy. I love the way it turned out. Chair, dresser and crib from pottery barn kids. Rug from overstock. Bedding from land of nod. Window balance-homemade by a friend. Bookshelf-custom made from etsy.

A Hunter’s Dream Nursery

Hunter’s name was the inspiration for this design; it had to be special, playful and magical. This is a modern take on a forest theme. The color scheme (blue, green and blue-green) is great for bedrooms because of the calming effects they produce. With kids, it’s essential to be able to quickly toss and hide all the toys that eventually get left around the room. An over-sized storage ottoman is perfect for not only toys, but also nice for propping your feet up during story time. It’s perfect to sit on during sleep training and midnight feedings. The dresser which doubles as a changing table was updated with zebra and number pulls. Working with a strict budget we paid attention to the little things like changing the hardware on an inexpensive dresser to give it a custom feel without the price tag. Next to the glider is an animal leg table for easily placing a bottle. Flanking the crib are two ladder bookshelves with large bottom drawers for additional storage. Toys from the parent’s childhood are styled alongside other architectural and colorful toys and a few playful grown-up accessories. The vibrant blue/green chandelier mimics the rug and brings in a touch of elegance. Little details like the blue/green glass closet knobs help to bring in more of the color palette, adding to the overall look. Handy branch hooks hang above the closet door and the curious giraffe mounted to the wall is gazing toward the crib. Babies love busy patterns so we chose the oak tree wallpaper. The little white bird mobile blends in naturally and he will be entertained by both for hours.
The focal point in the room is the custom neon sign that says “Hunter.” It’s written in his grandmother’s handwriting and will be a keepsake for him, but for now, it’s his night light.

Woodland White Nursery

Liam’s nursery was inspired by an adorable giraffe in a bowtie we found shopping on the day we found out the baby’s gender.  I remember seeing the stuffed animal and thinking how adorable it would be to find a bunch of cute animals dressed up like people! Kind of quirky, right?!  Well, I was in luck, and found Hello Small World, an adorable etsy shop, which had the exact woodland animals we were looking for.  A friend of ours even designed an illustration to incorporate Liam’s puppy brother, Walter Wheat, to go alongside the rest of the animals.
As for the nursery’s overall look and feel, I wanted the room to be a calm and serene place.  We painted three walls an ivory color, and with the help of my dad and my husband, the wall that Liam’s crib rests against is a striped wall with two different paint finishes of the same color: Benjamin Moore “Breath of Fresh Air.”  I spray painted wood letters spelling “LIAM” to hang above his crib.
The rug is soft and plush and perfect for tummy time!  Our nursery furniture is white and traditional, perfect to be reused for future children we hope to be fortunate to have.  The light is from pottery barn and I’ve noticed it seems to be an extremely popular one!
We hope you enjoy our nursery as much as we enjoyed styling it.

Teal Woodland Oasis Nursery

I wanted to create a space that felt peaceful and soothing for my new baby girl due to arrive on June 24. Teal, gray, pops of coral and neutrals came together to create a woodland-inspired oasis featuring handmade accents like a large dream catcher wall piece, whimsical prints from a favorite artist in Portland, Oregon, a mobile and stained glass feather from my dear, artist friend and a bureau I refinished that doubles as a changing table. The combined effect is a soothing, peaceful room that can grow with my daughter through the years and bring us calm as we navigate our new life with her.

Millie’s Forest Inspired Nursery

Our nursery was designed largely around the beautiful mural wallpaper that we found at anthropology. We tried to keep the room looking whimsical and forest-inspired. The bright green paint complimented the mural and brightened the room. We didn’t want the furniture to be too matchy, but we were thrilled with how the natural wood crib (restoration hardware) looked with the white changing table (restoration hardware) and bookcase (built by grandpa). We finished with pink details to bring a bit more femininity to the space.

Woodland Gender Neutral Nursery

I feel in love with the process of nesting after having my two girls.  I also design public spaces, such as playgrounds and parks in my everyday job.  Designing nurseries is how I am merging these two passions.  I chose this project because it was designed for a very deserving couple. The couple wanted a gender neutral woodland theme.  I found the owl removable wallpaper and used it for a focal wall and point of inspiration.
A well-designed nursery to me is budget-friendly, functional, reflects the family’s character and adaptable.   I believe a nursery is a starting point.  Your baby will transition into a toddler room and then into a big kid room and then into an even bigger kid room.  Selecting colors and materials, such as removable wallpaper that can be adapted into different themes as they grow will save you time and money.  Elements that can transition in this room, include the crib, removable wallpaper, pegboard organizer, and changing table.  The crib converts to a toddler bed. The removable wallpaper can be replaced or removed.  The pegboard can be used to hang toys and baskets as the child grows.  Finally, the changing table converts to a dresser.  The closet was also designed to accommodate many different types of organization from onsies and crib shoes to toys and books as the child grows.
My favorite touches in the room include personalized birdhouses painted by a friend and decorations from the baby shower that were reused.  I had a blast designing and helping this deserving couple create a nursery that represents the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

Green Woodland Nursery

I wanted to give my second son, Henry, a fun and fresh nursery while also using the hand me downs from his older brother’s room. I’ve always loved green (it’s the 2017 Pantone color!) and wanted to loosely tie in the woodland theme – I fell in love with the chair fabric first which was my original inspiration. My husband made the side table next to the chair from a tree in our backyard which turned out perfect. Everything else fell together around that. Black, white, and grey seemed to compliment and showcase the bold green color best and also give the room a cozy feel.

Mint Green Woodland Nursery

This nursery was inspired by rooms I saw on Pinterest and Project Nursery. I went with a woodland theme and I’m so happy with how it turned out! I’m a DIYer so most of the things in this room are handmade. I love the color mint green and found a fabric I loved that had a mixture of mint green, navy blue and gray. The room is designed around this fabric and all the colors go so well together! It’s really easy to design a room around a color, pattern or theme. So it’s best to pick something, stick with it and run with it! The sign, ladder, shelves and accent wall were all created by me. Checkout my blog for tutorials on how to make them!

Baby Ryder’s Woodland Nursery

This is our first boy and 3rd baby so I wanted a unique nursery that was different from the normal boy color scheme. I wanted to incorporate woodland animals without having to do much camo. I saw some fabrics that I loved for the bedding and that is where the nursery started. I had so much fun designing his room and just finished up the final touches. We tried to give the room a distressed antique feel with the furniture. The dresser is completely redone. It was my mothers and we took the mirror off and a friend of mine reloved the piece. She sanded it down, and brought my vision to life to match the nursery just perfect!!! I hope he loves it as much as I do.

Boy Woodland Nursery

After managing a modern baby boutique for the past six years, I knew the instant I found out I was having a boy that I wanted to stay true to my favorite vendors I have worked with for so many years. I wanted to keep the nursery modern with pieces from Oeuf, Dwell Studios and Monte design but add rustic touches like a burlap penant, a sheep skin rug and an antler light fixture. My husband and I love the outdoors, and love furry woodland animals like foxes and dear. From those inspirations I ran with the woodland theme and added decor from Fiona Walker England, created a birch tree wall, and added toys from Blabla Kids and Skip Hop to add to the woodland theme.

Baby Beatrice’s Floral Woodland Nursery

As good ideas always do… it all started at IKEA.
My husband and I had recently found out that we were pregnant and didn’t know the gender yet. We really wanted to stay “gender neutral” because we are the cranky types of folks who think the gender-specific coloring is arbitrary and annoying, but I digress… so we had planned an IKEA trip (we don’t live near one; the closest is 300mi away!) and while we were there, we discovered the woodland stuffed animals and book collection. So we bought  a book and several stuffed critters and decided that we would do a cute woodland forest theme in our nursery.
Then……. we found out it was a girl.
And…… I found this curtain from Bed Bath & Beyond. Correction: SHOWER curtain.
And I seriously loved the floral pattern and colors SO much, that we actually cut and hemmed the curtain in half and used it as the window curtain in the nursery. Then, we pretty much based everything off of that and the woodland theme.
We got watercolor prints from Etsy: these ridiculously cute animals, and this beautiful watercolor print with a quote from Alice in Wonderland, “Do you suppose she is a wildflower?” (Truthfully, I have mixed emotions about this quote… the pansies are being total Mean Girls because Alice looks different than they do; but it’s also a great lesson that even if people look different than you, they are humans with feelings and should be shown love… again, I digress). And – I actually MADE one of my Pinterest craft ideas (go figure!): The flower “B” to go above the crib using a cardboard letter, floral styrofoam, hot glue, and lots of silk flowers in the colors of the curtain.
The shelves and dresser were already ours; we just re-purposed them and painted them to match the rest of the colors. And then books! books! books! on all the shelves and jammies! jammies! jammies! in the drawers of the dresser. :)
The other interesting “woodland/outdoorsy” touch was the bookends and lamp. The bookends are mason jars we had around the house and my husband filled them with real rocks and dirt from our yard (our first home!) and then filled the rest with moss. Similarly, we filled the fillable glass lamp from Target with moss and swapped the lampshade to be gray instead of the off-white that comes with it. It added a little extra texture and earth to the room.
I was having a really tough time finding paint that I liked (story of my life) and then I found this color in… wait for it….. My sister’s bathroom! It is Zen from Behr and it’s BEAUTIFUL in person. I heard the advice that moms will spend A LOT of time in the nursery those first few weeks/months, so it should be someplace that you enjoy being, and have things you enjoy seeing (other than your baby, I suppose). So my goal was to make the room super calming, relaxing, peaceful, and beautiful.
I am stoked with how it turned out and loved the not-over-the-top girly qualities. Just because I like florals doesn’t mean that I expect my little future scientist to also enjoy them as much as I do! :)
P.S. The photos were taken before we got our LA-Z-Boy recliner – Joshua in granite. Is isn’t the most beautiful chair to look at but it is the.most.comfortable.chair.ever!! Super perfect for late nights nursing or rocking a sick baby.

Woodland Nursery with Gold and Silver Stripes and Stars

I absolutely love designing, crafting, and creating beautiful things. This was my first baby and I was on the search for a crib that would be different than what you normally see and good quality. I wanted something gender neutral. I stumbled upon this beautiful crib at rhbaby Restoration Hardware Baby and Child’s website and fell in love. I tried to talk myself out of it because it was pricey for a crib. I decided to keep looking but I couldn’t find anything else that I could fall in love with. So I decided to go with my first love. I knew I wanted a wall of stars but I also wanted stripes. I was concerned that the both together would be too busy, especially in a small room. Then I was on the search for themes that I could incorporate in and I came up with a Woodland Theme. I loved the animal photos from Restoration Hardware but they where way overpriced. I was so happy to stumble upon a shop on Etsy that had similar photos at the fraction of the cost.  I took forever to  determine what size pictures I would put on the wall. The animal photos come in different sizes. I end up going with 12 8×10. I had found the garland from hobby lobby but I had to remove the pink. I stumbled upon the teal blue elephant and giraffe and that’s when I decided teal blue would be my accent color. I tend to get carried away with hanging pictures on the wall. I left one wall without photos. I’m happy with how it all came together at the end. Now only if I could get my little one to sleep in there.
