Nautical Nursery with a Modern Twist

Our baby turned 1 on June 25th and I, of course, went all out for the celebration! My husband and I already owned a collection of red partyware so I decided that red had to be incorporated into his party. The whale inspiration came from a Pottery Barn Kids bedding collection that we almost selected for his nursery. The stripe, gingham and polka dot patterns were inspired by a pennant bunting I saw on Etsy and many of the other details were inspired by ideas I found while poking around Pinterest! {photo credit – Simply Mella Photography}
I wanted to create a room that was calming, inviting & evoked a sweet personality – just like our baby boy! It truly is a labor of love. Most people dream of their wedding dress/reception, I was the girl who always dreamt of being a mom & designing a fabulous, whimsical nursery! This was a baby shower thrown in May for my baby, Sebastian! I was 30 weeks pregnant :) It was held at the Bali Hai Restaurant in San Diego, California on a beautiful, sunny Sunday afternoon.
This is the nursery I made for my second son. I was inspired by some whale fabric I found at a local fabric shop. Being on a budget, I wanted to do most things by hand. All the decor was made by myself and my sister.
I love design and home decorating and when I found out I was pregnant, besides being over the moon with excitement for having a baby, I was so excited that I could design a nursery. I wanted to start right away, but I’m the queen of indecision so I waited until we knew the sex so it would remove 50% of the options. When 20 weeks came around and we found out it was a boy, it was full steam ahead. The easiest decision was the wall color – a light gray, since we’re renting and wanted to keep it neutral in hopes of not having to repaint. After lots of research we made the big purchases of the crib, dresser, glider and rug, and I went to work on making all the finishing touches, from the crib bedding (skirt, sheets and bumpers) to the pillows, artwork, pennant banners and blankets.
A nursery that can grow with Finn through the years!
This is the nursery we designed for our son.
Connor is our first child and being graphic designers, we really enjoyed working on this project and creating artwork just for him.
