Southern Inspired Nursery

For this nursery, we already had pieces of vintage furniture that were the jumping off point for the concept. I wanted to design a nursery that had some “southern charm” (sweet and soft), but I wanted to make sure it was done in a fresh way.
This room is HUGE, so it has to serve as two spaces; both nursery and guest room. I used a rug and furniture groupings to create different “sections” in the room.  The furniture was re-used from 3 different spaces, so it was key to try and keep the lines similar so that everything has the same language.
We needed to keep the walls gender neutral in case the kids share a room in a couple years, so I added the girly touches through textiles, furniture, and accessories. I used a color-blocking paint technique to minimize the diagonal ceilings which made the room feel taller. The use of floral fabric was something I knew I needed to incorporate from the initial concept board. I picked a colorful, fun floral fabric to keep it youthful. I also didn’t want it to overwhelm the room, so I used it for the roman shades, and used a simple white fabric curtain.
The dormer was an area of un-defined space, and in such a big room, it felt like an add-on. I separated it with a textured, sheer curtain, tied back with strings of pearls, to create a small play area. In the play area is a hook for her favorite dress, a mirror at her height, and a shelf with a costume hat.
We replaced the fan with a wooden bead chandelier that adds softness to the room. The area with the crib was kept pretty simple. A large vintage branch, given to me by my great-grandmother, creates a focal point above the crib.
The guest bed was kept simple with neutral bedding that adds a ruffle texture; so southern. I used the purple dresser as a nightstand to simplify the furniture layout. A vintage lamp and some girly accessories top the dresser. I used a blush colored, Turkish rug to create the “guest zone” in this area.
The rocker area has a nightstand and shelving for toys/books. I painted the “Tupelo Honey” painting because it is the song I danced to at my wedding, with my dad, and what I sometimes call my daughter.

Jamie’s Sweet Nest Nursery

My little man’s nursery has been the perfect little nest to cuddle, sleep and play in! It’s aqua walls with grass green and brown accents provided us with a soothing, warm yet airy environment in a very small space. Most of the pieces were DIY’d by my husband or me!
Now, my little man is not so little and we’ve transitioned him to a bigger room with a camping theme. (Hence, the toddler bed instead of a crib. I added back the changing pad to show what it was like back when he was little). This room will get a gentle makeover soon for baby boy #2.
Finally getting the pics posted here is my way of saying goodbye to this lovely little room!

Sound of Music 2nd Birthday Party

My daughter’s favorite movie and music is the Sound of Music so this year for her 2nd birthday we threw her a Sound of Music themed party.  The overall theme was elegant and classy and done in gold and ice blue with hints of green to represent the green and white damask curtains.
This party was months in the making and I could not have been more pleased with the outcome.  I included details around the party directly from the songs from serving “schnitzel with noodles”, “cream colored pony”, and my little girl in a white dress with a satin blue sash.
My husband and I created an Austrian mountainscape out of giant appliance boxes painted blue (for background mountains) and lush green.  We had even had “snowcaps” made out of poster board spray painted with shimmer pearl paint.  The mountains were placed in our backyard in where our guests picnicked under the trees filled with “wild geese flying with moon on their wings” and “raindrops on roses” which were made out of authentic sheet music from songs from the movie made into a cone with roses and greenery hanging in the trees. Strung crystals adorned the tree to look like glistening raindrops.  In the house I hung old travel posters, a ribbon garland and “snowflakes that stayed on nose and eyelashes”, and an Austrian flag.  Captain von Trapp would have been proud.
I had never made Austrian food but I made schnitzel, spaetzle, and kaiserschmarrn from scratch.  We had a pink lemonade bar outside, something the Baroness would have approved of!  One of my dear friends, Roni of Roni’s Sugar Creations, custom made musical note cakepops just for this event that were to die for. The food table was decorated with suitcases to represent their travel out of Austria, a picnic basket, copper kettle, woolen mittens, and bright yellow gerbera daisies just like on the hillside where Maria and the kids sang “Do Re Mi.”  I found green and white damask shower curtains and hung them in my dining just like the ones Maria had in her bedroom.
All of the guests left with a favor box full of soil, a potting cup, and Edelweiss seeds so they could plant their own Edelweiss plants which Captain von Trapp would have loved I think.
The movie played in the background the entire party and the music was playing outside.  Many of our guests had not seen the movie in years and all remarked that the movie evoked such happy memories from their childhoods.  This is my favorite that I have thrown so far and loved seeing my daughter light up when she saw Maria (a Limited Edition Barbie Maria) sitting atop her cake.

Camden’s Pink & Gray Nursery

This is our daughter, Camden’s, nursery. It used to be my stepson and my younger brother’s room when they came to visit — two twin beds, a large TV, Playstation 3, with blue and yellow fabrics and wall coverings, even snowboard and dirtbike Fathead wall decals at one point. We originally planned on transforming it into the nursery for our twin daughters, Aubrey & Finley, but due to complications, we lost them at 20 weeks of pregnancy, and had to reassemble the room into the boys’ room, storing all the items we had originally purchased for the girls. A few months after we lost the girls, we found out we were pregnant with another little girl. Naturally, we eventually moved the boys’ furniture again into another spare bedroom and began this labor of love for our sweet girl, Camden.

Zachary’s Classic Nursery

The nursery is painted a buttery yellow and the style is classic and preppy – boyish but not babyish. Colors are plaids, stripes and other patterns in primary shades of blue, red, yellow, and green, along with white.  The overall design aesthetic is one of discovery, exploration, and curiosity. The main furnishings are dark mahogany and cherry, with wall accents in driftwood/barnwood gray.

Oliver’s Oasis

We wanted Oliver’s bedroom to be a calming space. All of the furniture was from family and antique stores except for the rocking chair, which was from my favorite store, Simple Pleasures, in Marietta, OH. The furniture was all painted blue to match the upper wall and built-in drawers. I wanted the room to have the feeling that it was collected over time. Thanks to alliebphotagraphy for the pictures!
