The inspiration for Jonah’s nursery came from the Alligator Madras bedding set from Pottery Barn Kids. After browsing nurseries high and low, my husband and I saw the bedding set, and ran with the idea of incorporating alligators into his nursery.
We had a very small space to work with, and we knew we wanted the room to be as bright, colorful, and cheerful as possible…while making the most of every square inch.
Although the room is small in size, the amount of character we’ve added cannot be contained within these walls :)
I bought the crib and the dresser online on a site similar to Ebay. The closet I bought on a flea market. At first I wanted a blue with yellow room (we knew it was a boy) so I searched for blue or yellow furniture. When I found the yellow furniture I was immediately sold. We changed rooms at 8 month’s pregnancy and we had had already decorated the wall of this room with a gray plaid wallpaper. So the combination of yell0w and gray was born.
The goal for our nursery was to have a space that our son could grow into.
I wanted to create a perfect little nursery space that could grow with my little guy. I created a lumberjack inspired space with both vintage and modern touches. The room was easy and affordable to create. Also my husband is military and we live on base housing so I was limited to what I could do with the space! However I made it work and was pleased with the outcome! More at everythingemilygblog.blogspot.com
As much as we tried to get our oldest child to call his baby brother “Jack” that just didn’t happen. So now we have a Johnny on our hands. I batted around a few themes and kept coming back to a non-traditional idea: Johnny Cupcakes. At first thought it might not sound like a typical 1st birthday, but cupcakes, pirates and plaid screams little boy to me!
The nursery is painted a buttery yellow and the style is classic and preppy – boyish but not babyish. Colors are plaids, stripes and other patterns in primary shades of blue, red, yellow, and green, along with white. The overall design aesthetic is one of discovery, exploration, and curiosity. The main furnishings are dark mahogany and cherry, with wall accents in driftwood/barnwood gray.
I needed to create a serene and calm space for the 2 girls. The house is decorated very traditional so I was going for decor that will blend in with the rest of the home. The room wasn’t too big either.
I needed to design a space for Josh, a 7 year old boy. The mother wanted the space to be somewhat transitional. The colors should work well with more than one theme, and he should feel great in there when he is 7 as well as when he’s 13. Josh wanted lots of photos of past events on the wall.
I needed to create a fun room for Kiki, a 9 year old girl. The room needed a sleep area plus an arts and crafts area to nurture her creativity. Kiki is very creative and artsy and I needed the room to reflect that. Once we settled on the colors, the rest sort of came together.
A friend described the nursery as what would happen if Ralph Lauren went to Bass Pro Shops. It’s a hunting-themed nursery with a preppy touch and absolutely no camouflage.
A little boy’s nursery inspired by the woods surrounding our home, my husband’s love of motor vehicles and our family’s Scottish roots.
