I have always loved parties based on books, and since Where the Wild Things Are is one of my all-time favorite children’s books, I knew it had to be our theme for Graham’s first birthday. I’ve actually had this theme in mind ever since I was pregnant with him and purchased a print for his nursery that includes a line from the book.
We wanted a playful, colorful nursery in which we saved money and had fun by doing most of the projects ourselves. We didn’t want a theme, but used a color scheme of various shades of blue, bright green, orange, and chocolate brown.

Monster-themed nursery with patchwork pattern look for a baby boy.
One of the many joys of having a new baby is creating the perfect nursery that will grow with my little girl as she grows up from a teeny newborn to a toddler. I was determined to design something fun, bright and cheerful. I wanted lots of color and nothing too girly. I wanted something that hasn’t been done a million times over either – like jungle animals. Though monsters were gaining popularity, I knew our nursery would be unique.
For our little boy’s nursery, we combined modern patterns and color combinations with playful, fun tactile monsters – friends he can look at and touch as he grows in these first few years. We now jokingly call his new monster friends his “monstourage.”
For my son’s first birthday party, I created a whimsical Monster party-land, complete with lots of paper monsters, bright decorations, cuddly monster favors, and creative and fun finger foods! It was an amazing day with lots of wonderful family, friends, food, and fun – Henry won’t remember it…but his family sure will!
