Eco Friendly 1st Birthday Party
We were looking to have a 0-minimal environmental impact birthday party. The party was a hit with reusable cloths, healthy snacks and of course cute cakes.

This nursery was a labor of love! So many people had a hand in making this a beautiful place for our baby which is why I think it is so special. I wanted to create a space that was fun but also serene.
Eco-Organic Nursery
We opted for more of an anti-baby shower, baby shower – just a fun co-ed party without a whole lot of games (I’m not a fan of the “guess how fat my belly has gotten” game). I loved that my parents made sure that the party was as eco-friendly as possible (potted flowers for centerpieces, reusable trail mix bags for favors, etc). I hope the room serves as inspiration to others. Going back to your roots, looking at what you already have in your life, and allowing it to serve once again as “cherished” is my take on meaningful design. My quest to achieve a nursery with “re-purpose” was driven by three factors: 1) to find and reuse items with family meaning and history 2) create an earth-friendly space 3) do so on a budget in these otherwise difficult times. Re-purposed items: Austrian crystal chandelier (my late grandmother’s). Rocking horse and toy chest – mine own from childhood (repainted and treated). All bedding handmade from her great grandmothers in Austria and Greece, along with most all toys you’ll see. The chair, a special from the 70’s taken from my parent’s garage 25 years later (wood treated and reupholstered). Wall art photo copied from a book, frames taken from another room within my home. A photo framed of the late grandmother my baby girl was named after.
Project Nursery came to fruition about the same time Jackie was launching the Tiny Decor Blog, an eco-conscience, happy place of all around great kid finds! Soon after, Jackie launched the Tiny Decor store filled with contemporary, original, children’s decor designed by Jackie herself. So the other day when a tutorial on wall art she featured above her son’s crib caught our eye, we said,” Jackie! We have to see your fabulous nursery”. Funny enough, she never thought to showcase her own nursery on her blog. Project Nursery is thrilled to have first dibs!
New York based Amanda Moore launched her sustainable design firm re:place in 2001 by taking a holistic approach to interior design. When pregnant with her son Ryder, Amanda used her talent for developing environmentally-sensitive commercial and residential spaces in the nursery. In 2006, first:place was born: “A nursery design consultancy with the mission of guiding parents in making smart choices for their children’s rooms without compromising modern aesthetic or fun“. As a successful interior designer and mom, Amanda’s eco-chic nurseries honor family rituals, health, and all the senses as much as the need for a good changing table and safe crib.
Last week Oprah put families to the test and asked them give up everything they could live without in an effort to waste less. Yesterday afternoon, New Yorkers celebrated Earth Day in Central Park with music, games and fun for the whole family. So what are you doing to teach your kids to be “Green”? Like me, there’s probably a lot more you could be doing. Besides carrying the stylish Whole Foods “Better Bag” tote to and from the grocery store, I could start to think about those big ticket items, like furniture. What better place to influence your young by starting in their very own room?
