Atticus’s Colourful Vintage Nursery

As soon as we found out I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to design a non-gender-specific nursery. I pinned beautiful images of calm, neutral nurseries with whites and greys and natural textures… And then I remembered my decor style is really more maximalist thrift-store colour explosion than dreamy sparse minimalism.
I chose a colour palette of coral, yellow, mint and navy – I wanted it bright and cheerful, and I wanted the crib to be a real stand out piece.
Being on a rather tight budget meant I had to get creative. Most of the pieces were sourced secondhand or DIY-ed by me. The crib I scored for $30 and painted a bright coral, the rocker was another secondhand find that I took apart, dyed and made a new cushion for to better suit the room (why are rockers so uuugly!?)
The light pendant was a DIY based on the tutorial from Petal + Ply, the curtain pulls from a Design*Sponge tutorial and the buntings were also made by me.
I finally put the finishing touches on the room 3 months after my son was born, and it’s by far my favourite (and the only finished) room in the house!

Oh Joy Inspired Nursery

My oldest daughter’s room is very neutral, with lots of white, beige and gold accents (photos below) – colors I naturally gravitate toward when decorating. When deciding on a theme and color scheme for our second daughter’s nursery, I knew a few things – I wanted to do something bright, in contrast of Isla’s neutral space, and I did not want to have a typical nursery nursery. I was wandering through Target a few months ago and I saw a brightly color Oh Joy pillow and knew immediately I’d found the inspiration for the room. I loved the pairing of the bright yellow, turquoise, blush pink and neon coral and thought I could have some fun designing a room around those colors.

Bold Yellow, Green and Navy Nursery

This was a small spare room for guests. Nothing much in here except a bed and some odds and ends. The mother-to-be knew she wanted something modern, bright and bold. She was drawn to kelly green and had her husband refinish the dresser in Annie Sloan chalk paint in Antibes Green and add new hardware. She also purchased a navy rocker from Pottery Barn and a white crib. She was struggling with how to display/organize all the books she had for the baby. There was limited wall space since the room is on the smaller side. We took advantage of the space behind the door with acrylic shelves to store books. This allows all the color from the books pop from the walls. We also installed yellow and white striped cabana curtains from Wayfair. The yellow went great with the kelly green dresser and navy rocker. We took advantage of small corner nooks for more shelves and brought in bright pops of color with wall art from Homegoods.

DIY Agate Theme Nursery

We were unsure of the gender of our first child so we wanted a theme that would be fun for both. Hence, the colorful nature elements. All kids love nature so I couldn’t go wrong.
With every room I design in my home, it all seems to start with a single inspiration, or piece, to get the theme going. This theme all began with a beautiful woven “toy box” I found at Homegoods. It was gender neutral in color and so darling, so I just took my direction from that piece for the room colors. I found some perfect furniture pieces at random warehouse sales and thrift stores that had feminine details, they just needed color to make them gender neutral. I found an old Ethan Allen dresser and a beautiful glass door armoire! Then I matched Annie Sloan chalk paint in the perfect shades to compliment the toy box. The ones I used were: Napoleonic blue, Barcelona orange, and English yellow.
Next was the nature/driftwood element. I wanyed to include nature from our surroundings, so We drove up to a friends house in Duluth, Minnesota and collected a few pieces from the shores of Lake Surperior for a handmade & local touch. These pieces became the angel wings and the agate wall hangings I made. Agate slices I found at a local rock shop for $1 a piece and the rope is from Home Depot. The slices are hung with fishing line. For the angel wings I hot glued pieces that fit nicely together on to a plywood angel wing cut out. That’s it!
Then, I found the perfect orange agate drawer pulls at Cost Plus World Market for the dresser and armoire. To top it off I randomly found an orange agate slice lamp at Homegoods to tie it all together!
The Perit Pehr crib sheets and blanket were a no-brainier since they included all the colors in the room, but the alphabet pattern was subtle enough to not overwhelm the cute yellow Jenny Lind crib from Target.
Finally, the stripes on the accent wall were made by combining the three Annie Sloan colors in different ways to make several different hues for the stripes. I just created different guck was stripes by using different thickness tapes.
This project was so meaningful and fun to put together, so I hope it inspires you to put a local and personal touch in your little angel’s space too!

HBC Nursery

Being from Canada, there is nothing more Canadian then the Hudsons Bay Collection.  I have a mild obsession with all things from the collection & when trying to decide on nursery inspiration, I thought the colours & accessories we could play with within the palette would be amazing.
For the main wood feature walls/ceiling, I had a vision of the wood crawling onto the ceiling & connecting the change table area to the crib area.
For the main light, we hit up our local antique market, and found an awesome antique wheel which my husband (an electrician by trade) was able to turn into an amazing light!  For the change table lighting, he was able to modify 2 lights from amazon & create a swag look to frame in the peg board!
I wanted the main features of the room to not be to ‘childish’ so with furniture & accessory changes, we could make this room grow with our son.  By adding punches of the HBC colours, it brought the ‘neutral’ walls & wood feature to life with colour!

Fun, Fresh and Feminine Flower Nursery

The first item I purchased for the nursery was the bedding. I absolutely feel in love with it! The crib, nursery chair and dresser were passed down from Brinley’s older brother who is 3 now.The rest of the decor seemed to fall into place. The flowers on the wall were my mom’s idea, she saw a nursery at a client’s house that had them and told me about them… With my love for crafting I made a bunch of paper flowers myself. The bow and headband holders were made by my super talented and also very crafty best friend.

Lauren’s Colorful and Cheerful Dog Inspired Nursery

My husband bought me the dachshund dog print by Tad Carpenter at Flatstock/Bumbershoot in Seattle about 5 years ago. We have two sweet dogs and I envisioned using the print someday in a dog-themed nursery suitable for either a girl or a boy. Fast forward and we are expecting a baby girl this spring!
I used the dog print as the focal point for the room over the crib and planned the decor around it. The nursery is in our basement which is unfortunately narrow with a low ceiling and little natural light. I wanted it to feel bright, colorful, and cheerful without being cluttered and cheesy. I had a lot of fun mixing sentimental items, DIY projects, and Etsy finds with furniture graciously gifted by family and friends.
There is no closet in the nursery so we affixed a kitchen towel rail from Ikea to a shelf from Pottery Barn Kids to make a “closet” for our girl. It was fun picking out the special clothes to display, including some dresses I sewed and her first St. Louis Cardinals jersey.
I love everything in the room, but the crochet dachshund dog with the red beret (purchased while shopping with my best friend and her newborn in Kansas City) and the dog coat hooks (purchased from Ikea years ago on a whim) always make me smile.

Black + White + All the Colors Gender Neutral Nursery

While I was pregnant, my husband and I decided early on to wait until our baby’s birth to find out the gender. Because of this, deciding how to decorate a nursery was a bit of a challenge. Neutrals are great, but being someone who loves color and lots of it, I knew an all white and gray nursery wasn’t for me. I decided to decorate the nursery in black, white, and grey with lots of patterns and textures and throw in the whole color wheel to brighten things up.

Flynn’s Colorful Woodland Nursery

I spent 10 long weeks on bed rest following a preterm labor scare at 24 weeks gestation.  They were the scariest weeks of my life.  I threw myself into planning the nursery to avoid scouring the preemie discussion boards.  I had great aspirations for expensive decor but I felt obligated to spend as little as possible since I was out of work not making money.  I made what I could and bought inexpensive items online after extensive research.  I spent maybe 20 hours researching poufs alone.  I even spent hours learning how to make origami from YouTube videos.  The room was the perfect distraction and and was one of the only reasons I didn’t go crazy in those 10 weeks.  The nursery is now a bright and colorful celebration of the miracle that is Flynn.
