Sweet and Simple First Birthday Party at Home

Design Inspiration

Darwin's party decor was simple and colorful.  I didn't have too many ideas about what exactly I would be doing but I grabbed some supplies and just let the creativity flow on party morning.  I really like how it turned out and I feel like it was just enough with out being too "theme-y" or going over the top.  Next year if Darwin chooses his own party theme I'm sure I'll go all out but this year was more family and food focused.  I also took some color inspiration from Darwin's Nursery

Project Details

For Darwin's party, I decorated the inside using the curtain rods as my anchors, draping white streamers and tying small bunches of balloons to the ends and middle.  On the porch I used regular string to tie a line of balloons across our posts and small bunches again to the lamps.

I picked up three table cloths at Walmart which I used to set my color scheme.  One wrapped around our sideboard, one on the dining table, and one on our outside table.  I also had three vases of wildflowers set out on the tables which we gathered the day before.  We're lucky to have such beautiful flowers growing abundantly around here.  I added some of the same white streamers to Darwin's high chair as well.

We displayed Darwin's weekly and monthly photo projects.

I made and hung a name bunting for Darwin on our empty wall above the sofa (which I'll probably move to his room as nursery decor).

I also made Darwin's birthday shirt that I designed for him which is  available for custom orders in my Etsy shop.

And finally, for our "guest book" we used a notebook and instructions for everyone to write a message to 10 year old Darwin.  This is a new tradition I'd love to continue every year.  Everyone really seemed to enjoy writing to Darwin and wrote lovely thoughtful sentiments.  I plan to add a couple of pictures of him from the party and I also taped his birthday candle inside the book.

This is such a great idea for a birthday party. You could keep the notebook in a decorative Baby Time Capsule from http://www.timecapsule.com, to then give to Darwin to open when he is 10. Save other special memorabilia in the time capsule too from his birthday party. Love this idea. Thanks for sharing.

I love it. I think simple is always the way to go and it turned out beautifully. I have a party coming up and I will use a few of these ideas, thanks.

What a lovely first birthday- sweet, simple and classy! I LOVE the fabric bunting and the birthday onesie you made. Also love the idea of the notebook with family members answering questions for the birthday boy to read when he turns ten- so creative! Hope the little guy had a wonderful birthday!
