Paxton’s Nursery

Description

I wanted a fun and interactive room for my son. I picked helicopters since my husband is a helicopter pilot and thought that would be a fun jumping off point. I ended up DIYing almost everything in the room based off inspiration I had found. I wanted things that would be fun for him to look and like the paper lanterns above his changing table and the gallery wall of fun prints for him to look at. I had to be creative with storage since I live in a small house and couldn't use the closet at all, I got a big hutch from my sister in law for free and had my husband paint it for me and that's where all his clothes are.  I picked the colors apple green and light blue/baby blue just because I liked the colors with the black furniture. It was a huge labor of love that I just adore!

Design Inspiration

My husband is a helicopter pilot and I fell in love with the idea of having his room covered in them. Elephants somehow became a reoccurring theme also. The colors are black for the furniture, apple green and bright blue. Most of my ideas/inspiration are from Etsy, Pinterest, Project Nursery and other blogs.

Decorating Style

A lot of DIY went into his nursery it was definitely a labor of love.  I would call it traditional/modern with a touch of vintage from all the handed down items from family, friends and from my husband and I.

Project Details

Helicopter bunting - DIY, Photography by Brittany G Photography and my own,  Dragon (Puff of Love) - Vol25 on Etsy, Rug-Ikea, Paper Lanterns - Martha Stewart, Frames - DIY, Ikea and thrifted, Curtains - Bed Bath and Beyond, Crib- handed down and painted, Changing table - garage sale and painted, Hutch- handed down and painted, Gallery Wall- DIY I got inspired from other nurseries and Etsy and then made my own versions of the things I loved. Zig Zag bookshelf - Ikea, Small bookcase - Walmart, Big clothes pin - Walmart, Shelves already had just painted them. Monster print is actually just a cute piece of scrapbook paper framed in a 12x12 frame from Roberts. Monkey toy box - Target. I also tried to personalized his room as much as possible with birth stats, monograms and pictures.

Favorite Items

It's hard to decide but my top favorites are the helicopter bunting across the windows, the dragon and the dump out toys prints, the paper lanterns and all my DIY frames. My son's favorite part of the room is the gallery wall, every time someone comes over he takes them into his nursery and points to the wall and jabbers all about it while pointing to the different prints.

Advice

My DIY advise is to be creative to make it unique and plan ahead, it took me months to finish all the projects I started! My theme of helicopters turned out to be a hard theme to have. I had to make pretty much everything but now that the nursery is finished I am finding a ton of cute helicopter things! Also look on  Project Nursery of course, Etsy and Pinterest they are both eye candy and have so much to be inspired by!

I love the paper lanterns! How did you hang them? I am trying this in my daughters room and they look silly, love how yours look!

Love the colors of those pompoms. I normally don't like pompoms because I think they are overused decorations, but I really like what you did with yours. I like your rug, too.

The road map rug is really cute and unique. The paper lanterns and pompoms look so wonderful bundled up together in one corner. I also like those assortment of frames on the wall by the toy shelf.
