Farmhouse Styled Nursery/Guest Room Combo

When my husband and I found out we were pregnant and began thinking about a nursery, we knew that we would need a space functional as a guest room and nursery combo in one.  Our home is a three bedroom home; we have a toddler in one room, and couldn’t afford to lose our guest room space.  We wanted to style this space with to be inviting, warm and cozy, so that both baby and future guests feel right at home.  So began our Farmhouse styled nursery/guest room combo.
The room concept initiated with the handpainted picture that hangs above the dresser.  This picture is of my grandparents’ house, where my dad lived when he was 11, and it was hand painted by my uncle and framed using salvaged wood from this house when it was torn down.   With most Farmhouse styled homes, it is likely you will come across a windmill incorporated somewhere in the design. I located this beautiful, affordable windmill from my local Hobby Lobby.  From there, I knew I needed to find the perfect baby quilt to finish my style board and know the exact direction/color pallet that I would be following.  After a lengthy online search, I found a little shop on Etsy, Bantam Quilt Co. Her handcrafted quilts quickly caught my eye as they were stylish, beautiful, and affordable.  The owner, Carrie, was so easy to work with and quickly grasped my vision of the room when I shared with her the hand-painted photo.
Once I had these three elements and a more concrete direction of where I was going to take this space, I began working on the room’s layout.  I already had the beautiful Jenny Lind crib, as it was daughter’s crib that I painted when I was pregnant with her (painted in Annie Sloan Paris Gray and sealed with Annie Sloan Soft Wax).  We originally had a queen size bed in our guest room, but I decided to switch to a full size bed for a better fit without losing too much “bed space”.  My aunt and uncle had this beautiful, antique metal bed in their guest room.  When they heard I was looking for a full size bed, they offered me theirs so that they could upgrade to a queen for their grandchildren.  DEAL!  When I received the bed, it had some rust in places and was also painted white and gold; I knew I needed to bring it back to life.  My husband and father sandblasted the bedframe, my husband primed it afterwards to prevent any rusting, and I painted it using Valspar Chalky Paint Finish in Trousseau Blue.
I arranged the furniture (with some help from my husband and wonderful neighbors) and began picking up random pieces to decorate from stores in my area, as well as online.  I am a firm believer in baskets and storage and knew that I wanted as much storage as possible for this space.  I began with the closet, purchased a beautiful bookshelf from Target, chicken wire baskets for the bookshelves shelving along with galvanized bins for the top of the closet from my local Walmart.  Next to the bed, I placed two stackable, storage baskets that will double as a space for guests to use as a bedside table.  They are amazing and have a TON of storage space inside; I was lucky to have stumbled across them at my local TJ Maxx.  I am able to store family blankets as well as sheets and bedding without taking up the closet space.   With this space also being a nursery, I needed ample amount of diaper and accessories storage. The cute metal stand next to the baby crib was purchased from Kirklands and holds my diaper overflow that will not fit into the diaper baskets I have sitting on the dresser next to the changing pad.  It is stocked with all of my burp cloths, bibs and blankets for easy access. The beautiful, wood and wire crates were purchased from Michaels and sit next to the changing pad on the dresser to hold my diapers and baby necessities (powder, cream, lotions, etc.)
Aside from loving the look of this room now, I love the memories and meaning behind everything even more. We can’t wait to bring our little Jensen Hayes home!

Campbell’s It’s A Small World DIY Nursery

“It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears.  It’s a world of hopes and a world of fears.  There’s so much that we share, that it’s time we’re aware…it’s a small world after all!  There is just one moon and one golden sun, but a smile means friendship to everyone.  Though the oceans are wide and the mountains divide, it’s a small world after all!”
We LOVE disney world and are annual passholders…therefore we love it’s a small world!  It’s such a special ride to me.  I rode it as a little girl too!  For a few years now I’ve wanted to do our nursery in this theme and finally got to do so.  I wanted it to look very much like the ride–and my favorite artist, Mary Blair’s beautiful geometric designs on the ride and her ride concept art.  I knew I wanted lots of gold and white, but it took me a long time to figure out what other colors I wanted to add.  I was very close to doing just golds, silvers, and white like the ride queue at Disney World, but I decided to throw out the silver and add corals, pinks, and mint–still nodding to the tons of gold and white and glitter found on the ride :)
The geometric prints are my absolute fave part of this beautiful ride and concept art.  I knew I wanted a WHOLE wall…it took me 4.5 days and LOTS of painters tape…but I did the focal wall by hand.  I also added touches of gold glitter papers here and there as some of the shapes.  I also painted a lot of the shapes by hand.
Instead of going through each little detail, please note all the products and product links on the right side of the screen!
Made by me and not included in links:
clock face
buildings
feature wall
dresser (painted by friend)
lamp shade
several of the arts above the dresser (“2”, circles, one golden sun, happiest cruise, world of hopes, etc)

Couldn’t find a link for:
the round coral pillow in the chair :)  I think it’s from the At Home store!
The white flokati rugs I taped together from Homgoods :)

I knew I wanted a gallery wall–so I made lots of things and collected lots of items as well!  One of my fave things on that wall above the coral dresser (my childhood dresser painted by my friend and face-lifted with new hardware) is the gold heart with the hollywood lights.  Those lights remind me so much of the lights on the ride!
My fave thing besides the feature wall is probably the clock face.  I knew for a long time I wanted this above the crib, and I needed it to be light in case it fell randomly–at first it was going to be wood!  I changed my mind and had a local sign shop cut me a solid white circle from foam board and then I used glitter paper and hot glue to make the face.  I also did this with the large buildings (that look like the ride!) on the adjacent wall.  I originally had more buildings but took some out so it wouldn’t look too busy over there.
I also knew I wanted hot air balloons as a nod to the ending of the ride :)
I couldn’t find a cheap flokati WHITE rug (all I could find was tons of ivory!) so I found two small ones at Homegoods and literally duct-taped them together on the back :D
This entire nursery, all the furniture, decor, paint, etc–was probably around $1200.  I try to stay cheap!
This nursery is a dream come true for me and really special :)  The ride and words to the song are precious–promoting world peace and trying to get us all to relate to one another and see that we really aren’t so different after all!  I also love all the cultures in the ride and everything the kids can learn about world geography–it’s so fun!
Thank you for viewing our nursery!  I hope you like it :)

Baby Shower Brunch

I threw a baby shower brunch for my aunt and her baby girl due in March. Mikelle loves breakfast so we went with a breakfast themed shower and had lots of delicious breakfast foods. We also had a color theme of light pink, gray, and white to match her nursery colors. Also, instead of playing games we did crafts. We made felt bows for baby Aubrey and tied a quilt for her nursery.

A Rustic Chic Neutral Nursery

I wanted a calm and soothing room for my daughter to feel comfortable in as she sleeps and plays. I went with a white and beige color pallet to brighten up the space as it does not get a whole lot of light. I combined a few rustic pieces along with touches of gold and glitter to add warmth and sparkle. I am so happy with how it turned out and I hope my daughter will enjoy her space for several years to come.

Shabby Chic Vintage Nursery

After finding out that I was pregnant with a Girl, it didn’t take long before jumping right into decorating her nursery. I wanted to create a space that could grow with her, as well as would be calming, feminine and simplistic, all done on a very small budget.
Living in military housing, we were not able to paint any of the walls, so adding personality and character to a very blank slate of a room with white walls was a challenge. I knew that I wanted to go with a shabby chic feel, so my first step was to find a crib and furniture to set the mood for the base of the design.

Coral and Aqua Repurposed Nursery

This coral and aqua nursery was so much fun to put together. The only things that were purchased new in the room were the crib and the glider. Everything was either repurposed or handmade. The bedding, baby mobile, pillows, pennant flags, and blanket ladder were all made by my husband and me. All the shelves, picture frames, elephant, giraffes, mirror, toy chest, and changing table were repurposed. A little TLC and some paint goes a long way. We either had them laying around the house, got them at thrift stores, or bought them ridiculously cheap on sale.

Love Birds Nursery

When I found out I was having a girl my mother, aunt and I started my nursery project right away. My great grandmother painted the picture years ago that inspired the nursery, she titled it “Love Birds”. It is hanging above the crib. Coincidentally, the bedding I loved by Carousel Designs was also called “Love Birds”. Everything came together beautifully! My advice would be to take your time making decisions, find a piece that is meaningful to inspire you, and always carry around your fabric samples (you never know when you will come across something that works!)

Camp Calvin First Birthday Party

DIY Camping First Birthday Party
The camping theme was perfect for our son’s first birthday! All of the kids had so much fun in the great outdoors! All the signs and games were DIY, which allowed us to customize the party and save money! Something as simple as sticks and marshmallows made for adorable centerpieces on the picnic tables. The nature scavenger hunt was a free printable on projecynursery.com! The “Baby Trail Mix Bar”, that featured different flavored puffs, yogurt melts and little crunchers was a big hit with all the little ones!
