Little Brother’s Vintage Travel and Map Nursery

Description

This is a nursery I designed for my son that is due in November.  It is a vintage travel and map inspired nursery.  I went with colors that are generally found in vintage maps - browns, blues, and greens.  Most of the items in the room I made or refinished.

Design Inspiration

My husband is an avid backpacker and outdoorsman, so I decided to go with a travel/map theme.

Wicker Foot Stool: Michaels

Canvas Art above Glider: This is a picture of my husband out backpacking.  I edited the picture and added the quote on it and had it printed on canvas.

Night Stand next to Glider: I bought off of Craigslist and refinished it.  I painted it with a Behr paint with primer added in.  I then used a rub on stain to give it an antiqued/vintage look and distressed the sides with sand paper.

Map Lamp on Night Stand: I bought this lamp at the thrift store. I then Modge Podged some map pages onto it that I had ripped out of a world atlas.  To finish it off I added some ribbon around the top and bottom edges of the shade.

Bookshelf: Home Depot

Dresser: I bought on Cragslist.  I used the same technique as was used on the night stand.

Gallery Wall about Dresser: All frames were purchased at Michaels.  The 4 maps were cut from one of my husbands maps that he used when backpacking.  The rest of the wall art was ordered from Etsy.

Floor Rug: Rugs USA

Various Globes & Clock: Home Goods and CostPlus World Market

Favorite Items

My favorite item is probably the refinished dresser.  It was an ugly white French Provincial style dresser from the 1940's.  I just love the way that it was transformed.

My second favorite item is the globe mobile hanging above the crib.

Advice

Don't be afraid of color and of purchasing items from various different places.  Use a variety of colors from the same color family.  They don't all have to match perfectly.
