Jake & The Neverland Pirates 2nd Birthday Party!

Description

I designed and created all the decor and elements for my son's 2nd birthday party - a Jake & The Neverland Pirates theme!

We held the birthday party at an indoor play venue where the kids, and even some adults, got to enjoy inflatable slides and a foam shooting range for 1.5 hours, plus face-painting, caricature drawings, and pirate favors for all the kids. It turned out wonderful and it brought joy to my heart to see all the smiles on our friends and family's faces.

Design Inspiration

This year I decided to pick one of my son's current favorite TV shows and decided on a Jake & The Neverland Pirates themed birthday party for his 2nd birthday. I had one caveat though with this theme, which was to pull off a creative Neverland pirate's theme with no skulls - personally I am not a fan of skulls, especially for kids - so if you know anything about pirate parties, skulls are everywhere. I definitely had a challenge on my hands, but I saw it as a creative challenge to create more DIY decor items for the party - fun, fun, fun!

Decorating Style

DIY all the way! I love doing crafts and working with my hands. When I develop an event theme it usually starts in my head and then I go to my favorite stores and start finding individual elements and eventually pull the idea together while browsing for hours. When I get home I go to work in crafting and putting the idea components together. I also will search online for various components and inspiration as well before producing all the details.

Project Details

My favorite mainstream go-to craft stores are the Dollar Tree and Michaels. I purchased the majority of my decor elements from these two stores - scrapbook paper, cardstock, crates, gems, treasure chests, pirate hats & accessories, paper stuffing, necklace beads, goblets, frames, paper goods/bowls, and many of the other small details that you see. I purchased the pirate flag fabric and burlap from Joann's.

Some of the amazing DIY projects and details you will find in this party: burlap table runner, burlap bunting and ship sail cake toppers, treasure chest centerpieces with gold doubloons and gems, treasure chest and pirate booty favors, pirate flag and fishing net backdrop, birthday banner, treasure maps made from coloring pages, cake and cupcake stands, goblets, and descriptive tent cards.

DIY Tips: Nearly everything you see in this party were all DIY projects that I made. One I would like to share with you is the cake/cupcake stands. I bought a black plate and candlestick holder from the Dollar Tree. I painted the candlestick holder gold and glued it to the plate - viola - you now have a cake/cupcake stand! I also bought 2 glass goblets from the Dollar Tree and spray painted them a gold/copper color, filling them with paper stuffing, coins, and jewels.

Favorite Items

Oh I was too happy with how everything came out and worked together beautifully for this DIY birthday party! I love all of my labor of love DIY projects but I think the most creative is the coloring pages I used as treasure maps.  I actually hand-burned each one to give it a real authentic and aged treasure map feel.

Advice

You will find that there are not a lot of Jake & The Neverland party supplies available, so you will have to make a majority of your party items. My advice is to focus on the decor for the cake/dessert table and then figure out a centerpiece for your tables, games, and favors for the kids. Figure out a unique component for your party, search online for inspiration and products, and start making the individual decor elements. Give yourself a couple months to plan and prepare for the party. If would like more details about this party or any other party you are planning, I would be happy to share with you or answer your questions. I think the Neverland theme is one really interesting theme because of the many -- even countless -- ways you can play with the details.
