This project was a complete overhaul from the custom upholstered headboards to the custom bolster pillows. We wanted the rooms to showcase the girls and their personalities but also wanted them to be able to transition as they grow. The rooms have great bones and colors that you can easily change the accent colors for a completely different look.
Design Inspiration:
We took the girl's individual style and personality as our inspiration. Sophie is quieter, artistic and mellow. We chose the blue and purple color palette for her and a more serene overall look.
Decorating Style:
Julie Rootes Interiors is known for designing timeless, modern, livable interiors with touches of glamour and pops of color. With three kids of my own, I understand the need for a home to be functional as well as livable. But I believe you should design for the now - don't wait until your kids are older. There are plenty of great fabrics and resources to stand up to kids!
Project Details:
The monogrammed Euro shams were custom color matched and fabricated by Gramercy Fine Linens out of Atlanta. The slipper chair was already owned by the client so we slipcovered it in fabric by John Robshaw and the white furry pillows are from West Elm. Side tables by Restoration Hardware.
Favorite Items:
My favorite item is the slipper chair. It fits perfectly in the corner and I believe the fabric is transitional to grow with Sophie as she gets older.
Advice:
Mix the high with the low if you can but make it your own. Many of the accessories are off the floor from Anthropologie, West Elm, etc. We repurposed the slipper chairs, kept the dressers but changed out the knobs, etc. but also did custom upholstered headboards, bedskirts, bolsters and custom monogrammed Euro shams to personalize the space and make it unique. Also, check out on-line resources like Pinterest for ideas and start saving a file. You will start to figure out your style for a space and what you gravitate. I am a Pinterest junkie and use it for clients all the time!!!

What started out as a love for fashion turned into a passion for interior design. Raised in several cities across the United States before laying down roots in Texas, Julie Rootes is certain her ever changing locations are now reflected in her design style. Residing in Northern California for the last 14 years, her style is very much California chic sprinkled with a southern flavor. By mixing old with new and modern with traditional Julie Rootes’ designs are always timeless while displaying a unique flair and splashes of color.
Julie was raised by a business executive father and an artistic mother who could sew like crazy. Falling in love with clothes the moment she could get herself dressed, Julie has always had a sincere appreciation for design, admiring the painstaking details that go into taking an outfit from common to couture. After taking an art history class in college and a trip to Europe her love of fashion soon transcended into an obsession with interiors and architecture. Julie has a great sense of style, an impeccable attention to detail and understands how to make a home both livable (she has three children) and beautiful. Upon graduating from college, Julie worked for Prada in their retail division and in the advertising world before embarking on designing interiors for a boutique commercial and residential development firm. These fast-paced and client-driven environments taught her impeccable customer service skills, how to work under strict deadlines and most importantly how to manage budgets. In 2003 Julie started designing residential interiors on her own in San Francisco and Marin County.
Julie graduated from Texas Christian University with a BS in Business Management and Marketing with a minor in Fashion Merchandising and Design. She later studied Interior Design at San Francisco’s Academy of Art. Julie lives in the Bay Area with her husband and three children.
