Design Inspiration:
My husband and I are going to wait until our baby is born to find out if we're having a boy or girl. However, I have had such a strong feeling that I am having a boy, that I went ahead and painted the nursery blue, and not just blue, a deep navy blue. Crazy, right? However, even if we have a girl, which I'd be equally happy with, I wouldn't have painted the room pink anyway.
To keep the room from being too dark we added the white crib and glider chair and the large-scale nautical maps. And to keep the room from being too serious, we added the fun native american rug, playful vintage elements and Calder-inspired mobile.

Decorating Style:
Our home was built in 1871 and we decorate in a way that respects the history of the rooms, while incorporating a style that's livable for a modern family. The overall feel is on the more traditional/Ralph Lauren side of things with lots of vintage and antque pieces to keep it from being stuffy.

Favorite Items:
I am particularly fond of the blue and white vintage quilt that I found for a song at an outdoor antique market. I love how it contrasts with the red rocking chair and helps tie everything together.

Advice:
1. Your nursery doens't have to scream, "baby". Don't leave your good taste behind just because you're designing for an infant.
2. Use elements that are sentimental or meaningful to you, and don't be afraid to alter them to compliment your theme. The rocking chair was my mother-in-law's, that she used when my husband was an infant, we had it painted red.
3. Don't buy everything new, many of the accents in this room were found at antique markets. This helps the room still feel like a seamless part of the rest of our home.

I think that my cousin had the same dilemma as you did. Their house was built in the early 1900s, and she wanted to preserve the legacy of the place. But she opted for earth colors that were very boring. What you did here is lovely! i have fired an email to my cousin to show her your work.
