I had so much fun decorating our son Caden's nursery. I knew I wanted to do soothing blues & greens with a pop of orange. I found the perfect shades & had my husband paint the room is stripes of blue, green, & tan. He designed the layout & lovingly painted the whole room by hand. We found the perfect crib bedding to match called Laguna by Carters. Next I found a rocker on Craigslist & a bright turquoise ottoman at Target. I hung delicate butterflies over the crib in varying heights with fishing line to appear as if they were floating over him. Then I ordered a custom monogram off Etsy for over his changing table. The room was completed with 2 shelves on the wall with special memorabilia including a teddy bear was mine as a child, a signed invitation picture from his baby shower, hand knitted shoes from his great-grandmother, & a hand painted dog picture by his grandmother. The pictures helped bring in the pop of orange I wanted & tied everything together.
I wanted a calm & serene nursery in soft blues & greens
I wanted the nursery to be a relaxing place for my son but also fun. So I brought in pops of orange to break up the blues & greens. I didn't want everything to be matchy matchy either so I didn't buy all the bedding pieces but chose instead to buy coordinating pieces. I also wanted him to know how much he was loved so brought in a lot of personal touches & diy projects.

The butterflies are definitely my favorite part. I didn't want a traditional crib mobile but wanted him to have something fun to look at & when I found the butterflies at Michaels I knew just what to do. They are in different sizes & colors for interest and hung at different levels for contrast. They actually "flutter" when we turn on the fan! I'd never seen anything like it so it's my favorite thing.
My husband would tell you that the stripes are his favorite part because of how much work were involved with those. He designed the pattern, taped it off, then painted each color himself by hand -- it was many a weekend project!
Have fun with the design & think outside the box. Bring in personal touches & don't make everything match just compliment each other. Craigslist is a great place to find baby things- we found the rocker in the perfect shade of green after searching daily for weeks. Whatever you want is out there if you look hard enough & you don't have to spend a ton of money to achieve the look either.
