Bright and Modern Nursery

Description

I designed this nursery before my daughter was born, so it had to be gender neutral. I wanted it to be clean and modern, and filled with things that are meaningful, such as the handmade shelves and mobile, special items from my childhood, and a little bit of Star Wars.

Design Inspiration

I was inspired by a picture of a mobile made up of clouds and kites against a blue wall. I did not have a specific theme in mind when I created this room. For me, now that it's finished, the whole room calls to mind a perfect day, with bright blue skies filled with white clouds and bright green grass.

Decorating Style

I love modern design, with crisp, clean lines. I chose the colors for the room from the color palette of a summer day: bright blue, white, vibrant green, and sunny yellow. Some of the items I had in mind from the beginning, while others were slowly incorporated as they were found, or I had a specific need.

Favorite Items

My favorite item in the room is the cloud and hot air balloon mobile. The whole room was built around that mobile. It's special, because my mother made it. I also have a special love for the handmade cloud and elephant shelves (again, made by my parents), and the vintage Billy Goat Gruff print hanging above the crib.

Advice

Take your time! Buy sample jars of paint to make sure you're getting just the right color for your room.  And don't be afraid to make things yourself-- you'll get exactly what you want, and it will mean so much more, because you made it.
