Baroque Circus Nursery

Description

We are expecting our first child, a little girl and we wanted to create a happy, fun, welcoming environment for her.

Design Inspiration

I was inspired by a vintage giraffe lamp that I painted before I even became pregnant and we used it as a prop for a photo shoot I did with my sister recreating the circus scene form the movie "Coraline."

Decorating Style

Quirky Vintage modern.  I love mixing antique & vintage pieces with modern color & decor.  I try to always have a kind of unexpected twist that makes you smile.

Project Details

We bought the lingerie chest & the dresser at Sobo Style & I painted the handles with metallic gold paint.

The gold & white chair was a chair that we purchased from World Market many years ago and I repurposed it by painting it white & making the gold brocade slip cover.

The rocker was a gift from my father in law. My husband painted it white & I made the cushions.  The fabric I bought on etsy.com.

My father made the turquoise wood cube table for us many years ago & I repurposed it.

The Bead board book shelves are "Good Trading" brand from postfurniture.com.

The window panels are Ikea but I bought them on ebay.

The large giraffe lamp I found at an antique store and painted it.  The two smaller giraffes were gifts from my aunt and I painted them as well.

I found a hat box at a vintage store and painted that to look like a circus platform.

I made the trapeze monkey swing by wrapping a dowel rod with red satin ribbon & using gold cord from Jo Ann fabrics.

The sock monkeys I bought at etsy.com.

Faux fur bear skin rug I bought on etsy.com.

The red & the turquoise glass lamps I bought at Pier 1 Imports.

The turquoise base lamp on the changing table is from Target.

I made the changing pad cover with a great pattern I found at aloadofcraft.com.

I used a popcorn container to hold diapers.  I made a wet wipes dispenser from a tupperware container and  put it inside the top hat on the changing table.

I repurposed an old chandelier by painting it white w/ gold accents and put battery powered flickering candles in it..  I wrapped white satin ribbon around the candles to secure them to the chandelier.

The large rose on the wall & the frames on either side I bought at Target, & I painted the gold on the rose.

The 3 large pieces of art are done by a talented artist named Jessica Grundy who sells her work on etsy.com & fineartamerica.com.  I painted the vintage frames.

Favorite Items

My favorite item is the 3 foot tall giraffe lamp.

Advice

Always keep your eyes open when shopping vintage or anywhere- you never know where you may find the perfect piece that will add to the overall aesthetic of your room.  Get creative with repurposing things that may already be in your house.  A new coat of paint or a slip cover could turn an old chair into something completely new!  Let friends and family know what your theme is or what you are specifically looking for.  I got a lot of items in this room from family.
