Description

I wanted to create a room that was calming, inviting & evoked a sweet personality - just like our baby boy! It truly is a labor of love. Most people dream of their wedding dress/reception, I was the girl who always dreamt of being a mom & designing a fabulous, whimsical nursery! Photos except for the NY Wooden Art & Birthplace Wall all by Natalie Bray Photography (www.nataliebray.com)

Design Inspiration

My husband & my favorite things are Hawaii, the color blue (navy, aqua, ombre) & items that didn't scream "baby" - so they served as inspiration. We incorporated whales as well since it is a favorite animal of mine & it worked so well since most whale items are blue. We also love Disney (It's a Small World is a favorite ride) so we incorporated some items into the mix. As you can see, we have eclectic interests & had a hard time settling into what the room would actually have in it. We had a babymoon in Hawaii when I was just ending my 2nd trimester & as I was swimming around in the ocean, relaxing, thinking about the nursery...Sebastian kicked me & it came to me...I had to use waves/water somehow!

Decorating Style

I would have decorated the room in the same theme if Sebastian was a girl. I don't believe in gender specific colors/theming! I am not a fan of segregating by gender. I am so happy that most design forward companies are making more things that are integrating bright colors & fascinating patterns. We also wanted his room to be able to transition easily into a "big boy" room when it is time :)

Favorite Items

The painting above his dresser/changing table that I made. I designed & painted the waves design on the wall where his crib is & couldn't figure out whether I should leave the room white or paint also. Well, we painted the one wall by the crib the weekend before I unexpectedly delivered so the decision was made to improvise! I found a large canvas, grabbed a brush & went to town! I decided to paint the colors opposite of the wall & add his name into the waves with a lighter color to make it subtly stand out. I love this item because it was the first item I handmade for my son & I hope he will always treasure it! I also love the map hearts with my husband & my birthplaces (San Diego, CA & New York, NY respectively) & the California license plates with our names! I revel in the fact the toy store carried "Cristina" without an "H" :)

Advice

Collecting personal treasures. I have been collecting things for this nursery for years - a print from a trip, a cool painting, a little book, blanket, stuffed toy - & this way the nursery has a cohesive theme but isn't matchy matchy or doesn't look lived in.

Such a lovely beach-inspired nursery. I love the shades of blue all around. It makes the room very fresh and cool.
