We wanted to be surprised on whether we were having a boy or a girl, so we wanted to create a nursery that would work for either! We also wanted to create a nursery with design elements that could grow with our child into his junior years.
When we found out I was pregnant my Mother showed me an ABC cross stitch pattern she had been holding onto since I was a baby and never had the chance to make, she was going to make it for our new baby. I decided to base the nursery design around it and go with an ABC Animal theme.
I love blending vintage items with fun modern prints, and most importantly I love DIY projects. It is so much fun to look around the nursery and see heirloom pieces from my family as well as new things I created special for our new baby!
The entire room is based off of the colorful ABC cross stitch sampler my Mom made and the ABC sheets I found from Pottery Barn Kids, part of their Animal Alphabet Collection (www.potterybarnkids.com). I made the crib skirt and curtains to coordinate with the sheets using polka dots, stripes, and sage green fabrics. I bought an extra fitted sheet and made it into the curtains. I also made the elephant pillow based off of some of the pillows I saw from PBK.
The crib is from Pottery Barn Kids and is part of their Kendall collection. The dresser, chifferobe, and wall shelf were my Father's when he was a baby and mine when I was a baby. The end table was from my Grandmother that we refinished to match the other woodwork. The cube organizer is from Target as are the cloth storage bins (www.target.com). To make the dresser into a changing table we bought a changer table tray from Room Magic (www.roommagic.com).
The glider is from BuyBuyBaby and is the Tryp Swivel Glider and Recliner (www.buybuybaby.com). The lamp bases and shades are from Target and I covered the lampshades with fabric from the Circa 1934 Cosmo Cricket collection by Moda Fabrics (www.thequiltdepartment.com). I bought the rug when I went to college from a local furniture store.
I found some great ABC themed items like the wooden ABC mirror, ABC Pillow, and the Dr. Seuss ABC mobile from the online clearance section of Pottery Barn Kids. The "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" cross stitch sampler was stitched by my Mother when I was born. I bought an all white clock from Target and painted the numbers different colors to match the colorful theme of the nursery. The room is painted Vale Mist (Benjamin Moore Paint).
Honestly I don't have one favorite item in the room! I love seeing the furniture from my childhood and love all the new things my Mother, Husband, and I made for the room. When I look at the room I see all the fun we had putting it together!
I found there were a lot of projects in the nursery I could do myself - some like sewing the curtains and bedskirt were more time consuming but I also found little DIY projects that just took a couple hours or less, like painting the numbers on the clock or covering a lampshade. I like to think these little things make the room really unique (and save money along the way!)
