It is time for our toddler to move into a bed because she is starting to climb out of her crib. One probelm is that we also need a rail at the end of the bed. Can you buy just one?
Hi!, yes you can definitely buy just one guard rail for the bed. CSNbaby.com has them for cheap. I've seen them as low as $25. PBK is a little pricier but they have some beautiful finishes currently on sale http://www.potterybarnkids.com…..ew-to-sale

So, I have two year old twin girls who luckily, knock on wood, still sleep in their cribs. My questions is, "Is there a time when I should or need to transition them out of their cribs and into regular beds?" I would love it if they stayed in their cribs for at least another year, but wanted to make sure I am not missing some big window when I should do it by. Thanks! Amanda
This is a great question! I hope someone gives an answer! LOL! I have a 15 month old and know this day is around the corner. I'd like to know the "magic age", too. Thanks for posting this question!
BTW – You're a super mom for having 2 year old twins!
Yes, this is a good question and the issue of transitioning to big-kid bed from crib is one that many parents struggle with. I don't believe there is any "magic" age for this transition and many parents let their child remain in the crib for as long as the child remains safe and comfortable. Most children love their cribs and are perfectly happy staying put. In my case, I wanted to use the crib for my second child and let this be the catalyst for getting child #1 on to a big-kid bed. We purchased the side-railings for the new bed for safety and to create that "cozy" feeling kids love. I also, pumped up the move to the big-kid bed as a special treat for big-kids. Try reading a book like "Sophie's Big Bed" or "Big Bed for Jed", which tell the tale of this first rite of passage. Good Luck! http://www.amazon.com/Big-Bed-…..amp;sr=8-5
We switched to a toddler bed before our dd's 2nd birthday because she kept climbing out of her crib. But, she still doesn't like it—-she prefers to sleep on a blanket on the floor. How can we make the bed more enticing?
I would have to agree with another poster regarding safety. If they are climbing out of the crib, it's time. There are many toddler beds that utilize your crib mattress. I say that based on experience here in the US – if you live in Europe, this may be different.
My daughter was climbing out around this age. We transitioned to a toddler bed that extends to a twin size. Found it Ikea – charming bed & reasonably priced. When the bed is at it's shortest, there are lovely side scroll things that are closer together to prevent her from rolling out of the bed. I say lovely, because as the bed extends, it's pretty scrollwork near the head & foot of the bed. Here's a link to the Ikea bed: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/cata…../S39827962
My daughter transitioned well – it was roomy enough to lay it with her to read books or snuggle. We love it & it grows with her.
I agree also with the crawling out of the crib benchmark.
That said, this is what I did. We had to move a lot when our children were young. So I used those times of change and upheaval as opportunities for a smooth transition. So if you have a significant physical living change your child is going to be subjected to anyway, take that opportunity to change their bed too! It worked great for us.

I am happy to find this thread. I have an 18 month old who is a major climber. She hasn't tried to get out of the crib yet, but I assume it won't be long. I was wondering at what age it would be best. Thanks for all the input.
My son turned two last month and I don't think he's ready for the twin bed yet only because he will get up and wander or scream by the door. He loves his crib but he can really shake the rails which is making me worried that he'll damage it for the next child to be! I selfishly want him in a twin so when we travel, he is used to it. Traveling is currently a pain b/c he's getting too big for the pack n play or hotel cribs. I guess I should just set aside a week and try for the twin like sleep training back in the day??
One of the reasons I am most excited to re-design my kids room is so I can finally get the opportunity to use wall decals. We’ve sang the praises of wall decals many times but it…
