The ultimate children's design resource

Design Expert: Michelle Freedberg

Creating a nursery is an intimate process. I often equate it to purchasing a wedding dress (and we know how fun and stressful, yet meaningful that journey can be). It’s not only exciting because you’re anticipating the birth of your child, but it’s symbolic as it’s one of the first choices you make as a parent for your child. My best piece of advice to clients is, bring in elements that mean something to you and make you feel a certain way when you look at them. A favorite color on the wall, an old baseball glove that was your grandfather’s, a framed piece of art you created as a child, all the while staying true to your personal sense of style.

Being a mom to Stella (5) and Nate (17 months) has taught me so much about decorating a home for a child. Every room has a piece of them in it—from a pile of toys to an artistic masterpiece. A perfect room to me is a balanced synergy between rustic, classic and relaxed with a splash of modern. I adore a beat up leather chair, a rusted pair of candlesticks and a fluffy couch with an abundance of bold pillows. My favorite decorating secret is the art of redecorating—making your most beloved objects fresh and exciting by relocating, refurbishing or reinventing their use. I am never afraid to try new things and go out of my comfort zone. Choices I thought that might end up being a disaster turned out to be some of my favorites.

Michelle Loves…

1. Classic design never goes out of style. No matter what trend there is in nursery decor, elegant and sophisticated Nurseries are always my favorite. 2. Target’s Calypso outdoor dinnerware is perfect for creating a bohemian table with lots of flare. 3. Laura Mercier Secret Concealer under eye concealer is the one makeup item I never leave the house without. It brightens your eyes no matter how tired you are! 4. MZ Wallace Diaper Bag is stylish and functional. It’s by far my best selling diaper bag. 5. Chloe High Boots are the perfect fall accessory. 6. Dash and Albert indoor/outdoor rugs are my favorite rug collection hands down. Modern, fresh and nicely priced. 7. Once I discovered John Robshaw, I was hooked. I love his bedding collection, but most of all I am pillow obsessed. 8. Bellini recently introduced my all time favorite crib…the Merecedes. I have it for Nate in Espresso, and it’s so regal.
