Design Board: Lovely Lavender Party Inspiration

I’m thrilled that I am able to host a sprinkle/shower for my dear friend’s third child this month. The trend to throw “sprinkles” for second, third and fourth children makes me very happy—new babies need celebrating whether they are the first or the tenth to come along!

When I start to design and style an event, I look through many images to find just the right point of inspiration, and I collect them on Pinterest. (Project Nursery has some great inspirational boards on Pinterest, if you aren’t already following them!) For this sprinkle, the decor will be shabby chic with a touch of lavender and grey. The white will make the sparse use of lavender really pop and make the party feel airy and a little romantic.

As for the theme itself? We’re going to be all about baby love. I was brainstorming for a theme when I ran across a precious little banner strung across one of the cribs in a nursery from the Project Nursery Gallery—you never know where inspiration may strike!

My Moorish Mod Nursery

Today’s guest post comes from Wendy Estes, one of the fabulous gals behind both Layla Grayce and the new modern furnishings site Zinc Door. Wendy is a fellow zigzag lover (it’s no secret that Melisa and I love it), but leave it to this chic lady to create a fabulous nursery design that’s kicked the pattern up a notch by coupling it with another trend—the sophisticated Moroccan vibe.

Commonly found in 16th Century Italian design known as flame stitch embroidery, Chevron has been a trend with staying power for the past couple years. The new Zig-Zag Pink Rug introduced by Dwell Studio immediately caught my attention, inspiring me to create a new pin board on my Pinterest page. Little did I know, my dear friends at Project Nursery were taking note.

In addition to the Italian-influenced Chevron print, I wanted to keep the design sophisticated and fluid, showcasing a nursery as an extension of your home rather than a theme park, if you know what I mean. Craving more “world” influence, I sprinkled the room with Spanish and Moroccan, aka Moorish, design elements. These tile patterns are featured on the crib, hardwood flooring and bone inlaid table. Lanterns are a common design element in Moroccan design, but I opted for a more modern, star-shaped light in place of something literal like this Tangiers pendant.

Design Board: Grey is for Girls

One of the hottest color trends in home decor for 2012 is the color grey. When styling a recent Bellini photo shoot, we used grey and gold tones as our storyline, and the result was a sophisticated yet soft look. Stationery Inspired Design Board by Giggle’s Ali Wing

Still in search of inspiration for the perfect nursery? Well here’s an idea for you, think stationery! It’s a fantastic and convenient source for incredible decorating inspiration. Just think about how all those talented graphic designers and illustrators pore over colors, shapes and patterns just to create the perfect sentiment. Why not use it to your benefit?

Throughout the year, online stationery wonder Minted hosts a panel of judges to select their favorite cards in a Design Challenge. Giggle founder, Ali Wing, named “Baby Makes Three” as her top pick for announcing baby’s birth during her tenure as guest judge.

The savvy Giggle founder then took the card’s modern design one step further by pulling together a clean, minimalist abode for baby—curated by Giggle, of course. And with baby’s birth announcement being the star of the room’s design, don’t forget to frame it as a lasting keepsake.

Design Board: Foxy Nursery Design

Those sleek, bushy-tailed woodland creatures seem to be popping up everywhere these days. Last week, I rounded up some of my favorite fox decor items, and while doing so, I came across a darling fox pillow. It made me think how cute a nursery would be in this foxy theme.

Design Board: Olli & Lime Goes Pink

Here’s one for the girls. Modern crib bedding designer favorite, Olli & Lime added the “Logan” collection to their line. The geometric prints in pale pinks paired with soft gray rival her big brothers George and Billie.

But most of all, we adore how Olli & Lime provides a helping hand to design-stumped parents with inspiring mood boards for each of their crib sets.

I Spy…Rachel Zoe Son’s Nursery

I have yet to see a full spread on Rachel Zoe’s modern nursery for her son Skyler, but I did catch the ABC Primetime interview on Youtube. I spy a Spot On Square Roh Crib and Oilo Cobblestone bedding set in taupe for the lucky tot.

Rachel is a personal style icon of mine, and I was very intrigued to see her style translate to the nursery for her son, who is sure to be one of the best dressed babies in Hollywood (Gucci loafers and bomber jacket and all!). This mostly white nursery with touches of gray and dark wood is modern but soothing at the same time. What do you think of baby Skyler’s new digs?

Design Board: Coral Comeback

This summer, we’re working hard on a slew of fabulous nursery designs—one of which has a coastal, vintage beach vibe that we just love. In order to add a little modernity to the space, we opted for the addition of bold and colorful coral. While scouring our resources for coral-inspired patterns and pieces, we came across all kinds of fantastic accessories, lighting and textiles—if only we could use them all in one room! Not only is coral bright, cheery, unique and natural, it’s also completely gender neutral. Our particular project is for a boy, but since coral patterns come in almost any color, it’s easy to find a way to use it in any space.

Design Board: Go Bold, Go Red!

When choosing a color palette for the nursery, many parents lean towards soft pastels or neutral color combinations because it’s comfortable. I completely understand; it’s baby’s first room after all, and the idea of a serene and comforting space seems fitting. On the flip side, it is always fun to design a unique room, so why not set your child’s nursery apart by making a statement with a bold color. One big trend in nursery and children’s room design we are seeing more frequently these days are bold color combos.
