Five Going Green Tips

5

You are bringing a new baby into the world. Of course, you want to protect the world that you are bringing him or her into. Here are some simple ways to help keep our babies’ world a little greener as we celebrate Earth Day.

1. Use low- or no-VOC paints in your nursery and your home.

Lullaby Paints offers non-toxic paints in a large variety of colors and even offers chalkboard paint.

2. Buy furniture from eco-friendly companies. Look for terms like sustainably sourced materials.

Oeuf prides itself on being a company that creates beautiful products with minimal impact on the environment

3. Educate your child on the importance of reusing, reducing and recycling.

You can read books together to get ideas on how to go green in your own home.

4. Buy toys made out of recycled materials.

Green Toys makes toys like the tea set above out of recycle milk jugs. We have this set at our house, and it’s sturdy and durable. I’d never know it was made out of milk jugs!

5. Upcycle and Reuse. As you can see in our gallery, many new parents have taken old treasures and made them new with a coat of paint.

This Project Nursery reader found her daughter’s dresser on Craigslist and gave it a facelift with some pretty blue paint and new hardware.

What “green” touches do you use in your home?

Yellow Nursery Accessories

3

Over here on the east coast, we’re excitedly welcoming spring and the pending promise of summer sunshine after a long winter. Can you blame us for being a little giddy over all things yellow? Pantone identified Lemon Zest as one of the spring 2013 colors, and we couldn’t agree more. As fashion designer Ella Moss says, the bright sunshine tone is both optimistic and playful—what could be better for spring?

Here are a few of our favorite yellow pieces to bring the sunshine inside. Dwell Studio’s Zig Zag Yellow Rug brings bright tones, warmth and a sense of fun to any room.

From the modern to the ornate, we love this Vintage Upcycled Mirror; it would enliven any room in which it’s placed.

Even something as small as the addition of a throw pillow will brighten up a space with its vibrant color. This throw pillow from Room Service LA is whimsical and fun and perfect for that little pop of color.

Yellow Sailboat Throw Pillow

From the minimal gestures to the bold ones, we love this appropriately named Pretty Web Sunshine Ground wallpaper from Spoonflower. One wall of this (or perhaps a ceiling covered in this) would create a fun point of departure for any space.

We would be remiss if we didn’t include a fun yellow light that both brightens the room with its form and its function. What could be more fun than Angelpoise’s Giant Yellow Floor Lamp? Originally commissioned for the Roald Dahl Museum, it’s often nicknamed after one of our favorite books by the author—The BFG.

We hope you have fun bringing the sunshine into your home.

In the Nursery with Ashley Murphy

5

This is our interview series where we bring you the nurseries and kid rooms of successful designers, entrepreneurs and moms. Through this series, our featured guests will divulge some of their design secrets and share stories of how their nurseries came to be.

Let’s get organized with Ashley Murphy! Ashley is the co-founder of NEAT Method, a professional organizing company that specializes in creating clutter-free spaces within a home. Some of her favorite clients to work with are busy moms with too little time to juggle all the aspects of keeping a home NEAT. Sound familiar? They have locations in Chicago, San Francisco, South Florida and D.C. Not near those cities? Follow Ashley and her business partner Molly’s blog on NEAT Method, where the NEAT girls offer tidy tips and helpful product reviews.

It’s easy to see by their before and after gallery that these ladies have the gift of assigning every thing to its place and every place to its thing. That’s why it didn’t surprise us that Ashley’s new nursery for son Bennett is creatively organized.

Ashley, what was the most important thing you wanted out of the small space you were working with. You told us the measurements were 6′ x 10′. Was that a challenge?

The room was beyond small, so I knew it would take a lot of space planning in order to get all of the pieces of furniture in the room that I wanted for my dream nursery. The ladies of Sprout helped me to map it out, and then we worked within those measurements to find the perfect pieces of furniture that would fit my design aesthetic.

Now that the walls have dried and bedding is neatly tucked, what is your favorite thing about the room?

I absolutely love my Newport Cottages custom crib. The paint color is exactly what I wanted, and they did a great job of making it look perfectly distressed. Once I learned that we were having a boy, I knew that I needed a fun boy theme. Since there are a handful of vintage, flea market finds around my house, I decided I needed a vintage feel to the baby’s room. With the help of Sprout, we came up with a vintage boy theme. The numbered pouf from Restoration Hardware served as our inspiration.

As a professional organizer, did you find yourself doing anything extra crafty with Bennett’s room?

There was a door on the closet, and if I wanted to fit a glider in there, I wouldn’t have been able to open the door. I decided to remove the door. I figured since my closets are always beyond organized, it would be just fine if you could see into this space.

Do you know of a fantastic nursery or big kid’s room designed by a successful designer or business owner? Please send a photo of the room to Adrienne@ProjectNursery.com for consideration.

Party Reveal: Motorcycle Birthday Party

7

This year, my husband fanned a flame in my son that will surely become a lifelong obsession. He got him interested in motorcycles, so for our son’s 4th birthday, we had to (had to!) have a motorcycle theme.

Motorcyle Theme Birthday Party

It was really quite a bit of fun, from a fun photoshoot at Space Coast Harley Davidson for some really fabulous pictures to rolling a full-sized motorcycle into the living room for photo ops. Thanks to Rockets and Rainbows for the awesome embroidered birthday shirt seen above, which my son now obsessively wears.

Tomato cans of all sizes became oil cans in our motorcycle shop, and those motorcycles propped up on top? Cookies. Professional cookie makers are so talented, and there’s some fabulous fondant work on top of chocolate peanut butter cupcakes by Love and Sugar Kisses.

French macarons with little flames! So genius. Of course, I can’t make those either, so earthandsugar was nice enough to provide this unique spin on the macaron. Bonus points that she’s an organic baker!

Motorcyle Birthday Party - Desserts

I am good at baking cakes—they taste fabulous—the decorating part I’m still working on! But this chocolate ganache butter crunch cake was a total hit; the guests were fighting for crumbs by the end of the party. Sometimes tasty trumps over-the-top presentation.

The kids all had the opportunity to apply temporary tattoos. I spotted a certain child with eleven—I know this because that child was my daughter, and she was mighty proud of all her “ink.”

Our little biker dudes left with a bevy of favors—T-shirts from Stirling Promotions (great customer service!) in a jar that read “Born to be Wild,” cool sunglasses, skull peppered bandanas and a CD of the party playlist went home with everyone.

The motorcycle was a huge hit with parents and kids alike. Lots of photos were taken onboard! The full shoot can be seen in Festivities Magazine’s Summer 2013 issue.
