In the Nursery with Shawna Gohel

9

This is our interview series where we bring you the nurseries and kid rooms of successful designers, entrepreneurs and moms. Through this series, our featured guests will divulge some of their design secrets and share stories of how their nurseries came to be.

Maharani Weddings, a San Francisco-based website, is a place for Indian brides to dream about their weddings. The editors search the globe to bring their readers the very best in Indian wedding design, ideas and inspiration. Creator Shawna Gohel tells us that Maharani means princess in Hindi, which is exactly how every woman should feel on her wedding day.

Shawna, new mom to baby Alexander, brings a touch of Maharani to everything she does. Whether it’s baking a special cake for her friends or shopping for lenghas (traditional Indian wedding gowns) with her sister-in-law, Shawna believes style should never be compromised. Her newest project, Alexander’s nursery, shows that when it comes to style, Shawna means business!

Gray and Blue Elephant Theme Nursery

Did you bring elements of Indian culture into the nursery?

I chose to do an elephant theme nursery for Alexander since elephants are a symbol of the Hindu God, Ganesh, and are good luck for babies.

What’s your favorite part of the room?

Hands down my favorite detail of the room is the customized Ganesh painting my sister-in-law Rindha made for the nursery. I received the book Ganesha’s Sweet Tooth as a shower present from my dear friend Blair. Blair also gave Alexander my second favorite room item, the elephant rocker.

We were thrilled to hear you were a fan of Project Nursery before you started your design process. Did you look to the site for inspiration?

When I first found out I was pregnant, I was on Project Nursery and spent hours and hours looking through every page of the site! I love seeing what other moms do to make their rooms unique for their little ones. There were a handful of rooms that served as my inspiration, like Modern Cherry Blossom Nursery and Roman’s Room, and I tried to create a similar ambiance. From the arrival of the crib to the final finishing details, I had a great experience. It’s the only room that’s always tidy because I love it so much!

What kind of advice can you pass on to parents who are about to design their own nursery?

Designing your nursery is just like planning a wedding! I always tell brides the best way to make their wedding stand out is to infuse their personal details into their day, and that’s exactly what we did with the nursery. The three elephants are the logo from my bridal shower that my lovely friend Saman, of 2Create Designs, made especially for us. Those personal details are what make our nursery feel cheerful and cozy.

Do you know of a fantastic nursery or big kid’s room designed by a successful designer or business owner? Please send a photo of the room to Adrienne@ProjectNursery.com for consideration.

DIY Glitter Animals

0

These glitter animals are so easy to make, and they add such a glam pop to your kids’ bookshelves. The greatest product to hit the market lately, in my opinion, is Rustoleum’s glitter spray paint. I am so in love with this stuff and thought it would be fun to use on some accessory decor like these DIY glitter animals.

DIY Glitter Animals

All you need to start are some fun items to spray! These little wild animals came from the dollar bins at Target. Pick up some base white paint and your Rustoleum glitter spray paint, and you’re all set.

DIY Glitter Animals

First wipe all dust/dirt with a cloth. Next spray a white (or any solid color) base coat.

I used three coats, letting it dry for twenty minutes in between each coat.

Once the last coat is dry, spray on two coats of glitter spray (or until coated to the desired effect), and voila!

The cutest bookshelf accessory ever!

Simple Mother’s Day Ideas

0

It’s easy to go out and buy something pretty or sweet for the woman in your life who you want to honor this mother’s day. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to dote on the mother that you love; whether she’s your wife, your mother or your daughter, every mama deserves some extra love this Sunday. Here are some of our simple mother’s day ideas.

Let her sleep in! Dads, this means you’re on duty. New moms, especially, can use all the extra shut eye they can get, so consider yourself on the night shift. Even if your wife is breastfeeding, you can get up, change the baby’s diaper, bring him or her to your wife and get that little one snoozing again after eating.

Make her something yummy. Home baked goodies are always the best because you can almost taste the extra effort that went into them (even if you use the box mix). Decorate your treats with these adorable free printables that our dear friend Kim, from TomKat Studio, created for us a few years ago, and you’ll definitely have a happy mama on your hands.

Mother's Day Free Printables

Get her out of the house—by herself! It may seem counterintuitive on a day that is all about celebrating the nurturing of motherhood, but new moms especially need a minute to breathe. You may have to do a little convincing to get her to leave your little baby behind or she might be out the door before you can say goodbye, but tell her, you’re on kid duty, and she can take a walk, go get a coffee, pick out a new book—whatever she wants!

Get the kids involved. Nothing is sweeter than the effort of little hands trying to do something special for mom. Rebekah shared a simple table runner that would be an easy element for kids to work on to create a special meal for mom.

What do you have planned for your wife or mom? And moms out there, what is one of your favorite special mother’s day moments?

Geometric Accent Wall

0

Remember that fruit border your mom had in your kitchen? Or the paisley print in maroon and navy in your dining room? No, don’t worry—they aren’t back, and they definitely are NOT trending. Those accents may be out, but geometric accent walls, whether with wallpaper or paint, are making a big statement in nurseries.

I fell in love with this nursery the second I saw the fabulous Moroccan stenciled wall in my favorite color, coral!

How fantastic would this green diamond print be with a navy and yellow color palette?

If you don’t want the commitment of permanent wallpaper and don’t feel like lifting a paintbrush, you can use temporary wallpaper like Tori Spelling did in her son’s nursery.

I love how this bright honeycomb print adds an eclectic feel to the gallery wall.

Big Bold Pattern Trend

0

Whether it’s work related or just plain fun, we love to invest in a little fashion “research” from time to time. Lately, we’ve been loving the trend of bold, bordering on wild, patterns, which is everywhere from skinny jeans and fun sneakers to bathing suits and party dresses. It’s often the case that design trends mirror fashion trends (or vice versa), which is why we find it fun to imagine the ways to use hugely bold pattern trend in the nursery or child’s room.

Bold Pattern Trend in Lighting

For example, these amazing lamps (above) immediately brought to mind a fabulous dress we’d recently seen (below). The intensely saturated colors of each seem perfect for a child’s room (the lamp) and the child’s on-the-go mom (the dress)!

And, it’s not that we want to literally blend in, but these beautifully patterned jeans bear an uncanny resemblance to this pretty blue duvet cover!

Truly, the more we think about this amazingly brash color and pattern trend, the more we want to get our hands on some big bold patterns and create a wonderfully happy room for a little someone we love!
