Tailgate 2nd Birthday Party

For our littlest guy’s second birthday, figuring out what type of party to throw was no problem.  With balls being one of his loves (any type of ball…footballs, baseballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, basketballs you name it…) and his birthday being near the beginning of football season I knew that we needed to throw him a birthday tailgate party…and so we did.
I started off with an attempt to keep things simple, but once I get into a theme I can’t help but dive all in.  I was really pleased with how everything turned out but I think my favorite parts were the table-sized football field that I made of turf from Menards and some white spray paint and also the watermelon Michigan Wolverine replicate helmet that my father carved for the party.  I was also very pleased with how nicely the “concessions” turned out with such simple, yet appropriate decorative touches including hanging chips and stat and menu “blackboards”.

Big Buoy Room

Back when I was very pregnant with second son, my husband and I worked hard to transform our guest room into a big boy room for our soon-to-be-big-brother.  It took me forever to figure out what type of theme I wanted to go with for the room since there was nothing in particular that he was really crazy about.  I perused the internet for bedding that I liked and found something that I loved at Land of Nod.  It was adorable and its buoys reminded me of Maine and the love that my husband and his family have for it.  Since the bedding was red, white and blue I decided to go with navy and white stripes for the room.  It was a big change from the previous beige that the guest room had been and I was nervous that it would be too much for the room, but I gave it a shot anyway and was pretty happy with the result!
The walls’ stripes were made by painting the walls in the dark blue, getting all of the tape in place and painting over all of it with the same blue.  This helped to seal any openings in the tape that might allow drips to come through.  Once that was all dry, I painted every other stripe between the tape with white to reveal perfectly crisp lines when everything was dry and the tape was off.
For the remainder of the room, I fully embraced the nautical look with some accents that I found at Hobby Lobby including some wooden buoys, two small art pieces, a fishing net that I hung above the bed and a weathered frame for my son’s scratch-off travel map that his uncle gave him.  I also purchased a red and white striped basket to be used for laundry from Hobby Lobby and the rug, nautical lamp and blue and white stripped storage bin from Target.  Additionally, I made a few accents of my own by painting some white lanterns red to look like fishing bobbers (an idea I found on Pinterest), refinishing metal lockers and a dresser that we already had and covering some small square cork boards with red fabric to provide some photo/artwork space.  Finally, I found a piece of artwork that was shaped like a boat steering wheel at a local rummage sale, which I painted over to make an entry sign for the bedroom door and I also added some little lobsters, moose and other small accents from our family trips to Maine to complete the room for our son.

Owl Nursery

I waited several years to have our first child with hopes and dreams being dashed month after month along the way.  Beyond the obvious desire to have my own baby to snuggle, love and raise, I also had the desire to design and make a beautiful nursery to put that little bundle of joy in.  Finally, after approximately three years of not-so-patiently waiting, my dream became a reality and I began to design a nursery for our little addition.
Since this space is a part of our small Cape Cod second floor/master suite I wanted the color scheme to easily blend with what we already have, and I wanted the room to not be babyish so that it could be transitioned at a later date into a space for my husband and I to enjoy.  For the design of the room I was inspired by an Owl Table Lamp from West Elm, tree silhouettes at kitchenbelleicious.com, and a beautiful quilt by Petunias on Easy.  For more on my Owl Nursery visit my blog: studiomcreationsdesign.blogspot.com/2016/09/owl-nursery.html
