A Beloved Nursery Grows Up

This floral nursery from our gallery was, and still is, adored by our Project Nursery readers, and it inspired many many other parents to design their nursery using that gorgeous Anthropologie floral wallpaper.

The nursery was designed by former Project Nursery team member Mallory Fitzsimmons for her daughter Landry Kate, so when Mallory transitioned her daughter to a big girl space we went to straight to the source for the full scoop. Thank you, Mallory, for sharing with us!

Your daughter’s nursery is a beloved room in our project gallery. How did you transition to a big girl’s room while still keeping that gorgeous design intact?
Since I knew that the wallpaper was going to remain the focal point of the room, it was easy to transition. Thankfully the wallpapered wall fit a full sized bed perfectly, so we just swapped out the crib for the bed and voila! To make it a little more “grown up” we also switched out the heavy drapes for clean and modern roman shades that are functional and easy for her to raise and lower herself. I swapped the wall that the dresser was on and cleared up a bit of play space for her makeup table. I wanted to make sure that the room was still fun and whimsical (note the stuffed unicorn and play table), but could still grow with her as the years fly by (clean and crisp bedding, abstract art and a bold monogram).

Did Landry have any specific requests?
The only thing that she was dying for was a big girl bed! I’d scored her vintage bamboo headboard years back on Craigslist and always knew we would use it in her big girl room. It was so fun to see her transition seamlessly into a big girl bed, although a little sad too!

Do you have any words of advice for other designers and parents?
Design rooms around something that you truly love, not necessarily what’s in style or “trendy” at the moment! Our original design came from a mint green bag that I picked up in Paris, and once I saw the floral wallpaper, I knew that it was the perfect way to bring my design to life. I still love the wallpaper to this day (and any of you who know me will definitely consider this a long time to keep something in my home) and was thrilled that it was versatile enough to grow with our daughter.

Congrats on the news of your pregnancy! We, of course, can’t wait to see the nursery design! Any hints on the direction you are taking the new space?
Thank you!! We cannot wait to meet our second daughter! A lot of this goes back to the question above, and after tons of research and Pinterest stalking, my heart is going back to the things I love, which are oddly similar to elements in Landry’s nursery. The color scheme and overall feel will be wildly different, but you will likely be seeing some florals and a bold buffalo check incorporated into the design. This room is so beautiful! I love the white side table. Is there a source you can provide for that?
