Vendor Spotlight: Liz and Roo

Welcome to Project Nursery’s new series, spotlighting our Featured Vendors from our Vendor Guide. The guide includes carefully curated vendors from the baby and children industry in design, retail, special services and much more.

Let us introduce you to Liz and Roo, a bedding company that specializes in bumperless crib sets and mix-and-match separates, as well as bedding for toddlers and beyond. They offer sophisticated fabrics in on-trend colors and patterns that still have that element of fun that every nursery needs. Oh, and every piece of their line is made right here in the USA! Visit their vendor profile for more information.

What about Liz and Roo makes you most proud?

We have hands-on involvement in the design, development and manufacturing of all of our products. That’s the benefit of being made in the USA—it allows us to control the quality of the end product. I also love that we have built brands (Liz and Roo and American Made Dorm & Home) that help families transition from crib to toddler to teen bedding and then off to college with American Made Dorm. It’s all made in the USA, and we use a lot of overlapping designs between baby, toddler and teen.

Do you have a signature product or design element?

Our bumperless (or bumper-free) baby bedding collections are our signature products. A crib can still be beautiful without bumpers! The addition of the rail cover (or teething rail guard) is an attractive design element that is also functional: it protects the beautiful wood on a crib from damage from teething marks.

What is your biggest piece of advice for new parents?

Designing your baby’s nursery is a thrill, especially the first time, but when it’s your first baby, it can also be overwhelming. When shopping for your new baby, remember you don’t need everything you see advertised. Keep it simple and know that you will have plenty of time to add to baby’s room. Focus on the basics—color, furniture and bedding.

Let your baby’s nursery reflect your own personal style. Check out Pinterest boards and Project Nursery for fantastic ideas. When it comes to color, you’ll be choosing paint color, furniture color (white, gray, espresso, etc.) and then your crib bedding color(s).

It’s hard to imagine now, but you will have a big boy or girl before you know it. You’ll need a crib to start, and we recommend a convertible crib that converts to a toddler bed and then to a full (or queen) sized bed. A convertible crib set will last for years!

After you’ve chosen the furniture, you’ve got decisions to make when it comes to bedding. All Liz and Roo four-piece crib bedding sets are bumperless in response to the American Pediatric Society’s recommendation. Each set features a rail cover, which not only adds beauty and elegance to the overall look of the crib bedding but also protects against teething marks on your beautiful (and expensive) crib. Down the road when the crib converts to a full-sized bed, you’ll want the headboard and footboard to look like new, and that’s why every crib should have a rail cover.

Speaking of growing with your child, we also offer bedding that transitions from toddler to teen! Our patterns are timeless and can be played up or down with fun pillows. And always remember, the most important thing is to have fun with your nursery design!

Where do you find your inspiration?

It always starts with the fabric. Constantly on the hunt for sophisticated fabrics, we attend fabric shows and markets, and we always have our eye on what’s new in bedding, whether it be for adults or for babies. We all love poring over magazines and flipping through fabric samples at shows. When we find something new that we love, we begin to work around it to fill in complementary colors and designs.

Our store owners are also influential in our designs. When they see a trend—which may easily stem from their own mom-to-be customers—they are first to call us to chat about it. There are a handful of store owners that I speak with all the time about what their customers ask for in baby bedding, what they are seeing as trends and what is popular. It always seems to fall into place so easily, and most importantly, we love every collection just as much as the one before.

Not only are all of our collections manufactured in the USA, but our fabrics (with the exception of “minky cuddle”) are also made in the USA, so we always keep that in mind when shopping for fabrics and trims.

If we had unlimited resources, we would be rolling out new bedding collections every day!
