In the Nursery with Athena Rutigliano

This is our interview series where we bring you the nurseries and kid rooms of successful designers, entrepreneurs and moms. Through this series, our featured guests will divulge some of their design secrets and share stories of how their nurseries came to be.

Athena Rutigliano in Daughter's Nursery

Athena Rutigliano is founder of Luca’s Lullaby Interiors and mother to two beautiful girls. She describes herself as being “obsessed with anything fashion, creative and design related.” Her experience in the fashion industry paved the way for her love of chic design, and she enjoys bringing personal touches and originality to her projects.

We love that Athena gave just as much care to her own home project as those of her clients. We think you’ll enjoy Athena’s youngest’s glamorous nursery!

Glamorous Nursery

How did the design process for your home nursery compare to how you approach projects for clients?

I always like to incorporate personalized elements so that each room is original and specific to my client. That could mean incorporating a handmade item, changing hardware, painting furniture or finding special fabric to customize chairs and bedding. I definitely wanted my own nursery to reflect my taste, which usually leans more towards chic and glamorous inspired designs. Personal touches on certain elements in the room create a feeling that this room is specially made for your little munchkin and no one else.

Glamorous Purple and Gray Nursery

What is your favorite thing about the room?

I love that it has a simple, glamorous feel to it without feeling overdone and untouchable. Every time I look at the assorted frames over her crib, they bring a smile to my face and remind me of being pregnant, her arrival and how special it was to have another addition to the family.

There’s so much to admire about this space. What’s the first thing people notice when stepping foot into this room?

They usually notice the color palette of gray and purple and comment on how relaxing, elegant and calming the room design is. The curtains and crib are the favorites.

As a successful professional and DIY designer, what words of wisdom can you offer parents who are ready to start their nursery?

Pick a color that calms you and makes you feel at ease. You’ll be spending a good amount of time in this room, whether it’s putting your little cutie to bed, feeding them or simply spending quality time with them. It’s important to love your space! Try to incorporate some personal elements like a childhood keepsake or a simple photo. Don’t be afraid to shop at random places to pick different pieces. Mixing different styles can be fun!

Do you know of a fantastic nursery or big kid’s room designed by a successful designer or business owner? Please send a photo of the room to Adrienne@ProjectNursery.com for consideration.

Do you mind sharing where the curtains are from?

Angel wings were from Pottery Barn, 5 years ago. I spray painted them. Restoration Hardware Baby & Child has a few options as well. Hope that helps! :-)
