The Skinny on Maternity Jeans

There are two things I think are the most dreadful things to shop for—swimsuits and jeans. Try adding a pregnant belly into the mix, and then you really have a challenge! I have been on the eternal search for the perfect pair of skinny leg maternity jeans. I have borrowed from friends and tried on just about every pair you can imagine. Everything ranging from the $200 pairs at A Pea in the Pod to the less expensive jeans at Old Navy. After a five-month long search, I think I finally found what I was looking for!

A friend loaned me these J Brand Mama J Skinny Jeans, which have worked out just fine, but I don’t love them. The elastic on the sides ended up stretching out for me—they were great when I first put them on, but I found myself having to tug them up often.

I really like the AG Stilt Jeans Secret Fit Belly from A Pea in the Pod. The fit and the wash is perfect. And near the end of your pregnancy, there is nothing more comfortable than having a full panel waistband. The thing I struggled with is the price. Is it worth it to spend $200 on maternity jeans? I say yes if they fit great and if you plan to have more pregnancies in the future. For me, I needed something a little more budget friendly, so my search continued…

I tried on the Loved By Heidi Klum Under Belly Jeans at A Pea in The Pod, and I was pleasantly surprised. They have a great dark wash and fit really nice. My only concern was if they would stay up as my belly grew. I think what’s nice about having a panel on maternity jeans is that they hold up around the waist a little better. You can’t beat the price though at $39.98.

In the end, by far my favorite fitting jean (for the price) was the Gap Always Skinny Jean in dark, $79.99. The dark wash was flattering, and they fit like the expensive premium denim I tried on. Normally, I am very hesitant of a demi panel, but Gap’s demi panel is extremely comfortable. It hits at a spot that won’t dig into your belly and will expand with you throughout your entire pregnancy.

Do you have a favorite maternity jean? If so, please share!

The Gap skinny jean was the one I liked best as well. I wore them a ton while pregnant.

I wore Gap maternity jeans exclusively for both of my pregnancies. They were the only reasonably priced jeans I could find long enough.

    I wore a skinny Jeans from h&m.

Great post — I have yet to try Gap Maternity jeans, but I really like a pair I recently purchased of the American Star brand at Motherhood Maternity. They are made of a really soft cotton, and were only ~$50, which is a nice bargain compared to some other brands I’ve seen. I bought a dark denim slim fit bootcut style (full-panel), but can’t seem to find it online. Might be a style only available in stores…?

Also, Gilt.com has been having quite a few maternity sales lately, including big discounts on brand name jeans.

So glad I found the Project Nursery site – I’m about to start working on our nursery soon, and this site has given me lots of inspiration!

Side note – I recently posted on my blog about shopping for/wearing maternity jeans – didn’t write anything about brands, but thought I’d offer up some more experiences we might be able to relate to :) http://wp.me/p2035P-4I

100% agree!!! After spending 2 hours trying on every pair of jeans in Destination Maternity (from the most expensive designer jeans to the less expensive store brands) could not find a pair that fitted well. So I thought why not try Gap and also ordered the dark skinny jeans. Been wearing since End of November and love them!! Actually just ordered the dark boot cut last week (they have full panel) and was so excited last might when I tried them on.

I loved the maternity jeans I got from Forever 21. They were very inexpensive and have lasted a while. I got the jeggins and skinny jeans. Would def. recommend them.

I am so glad that I wasn’t crazy and that the Gap truly is the best fit! I have to say, I would much rather spend $69 than $200! Thanks for your other recommendations too!

Funny that this is your topic for today! I just finished and posted on our blog about my favorite maternity jeans. At Fashion Forward Maternity we let you rent designer jeans (and much more for your maternity wardrobe) so that you can have the variety and style at a fraction of the cost of purchasing the same items new. http://wp.me/p1PmOm-1a

My favorite are the Citizens. I also cringed at first at the price but I didn’t buy any maternity clothes besides splurging on a nice pair of jeans and a baby bag. In the end the leggings couldn’t even hold but these jeans did.
This style of Gap though looks cute and nothing is better than scoring a great deal!

It is appropriate time to make a few plans for the long run and it is time to be happy. I’ve read this publish and if I may I wish to recommend you few interesting issues or advice. Perhaps you can write next articles referring to this article. I want to read more things about it!

My mom bought me these ones:
    http://www.carsons.com/shop/women/maternity/three-seasons-maternity-skinny-jeans-dark-rinse_312329.html

from Carsons – probably on sale. And they are my FAVORITE! They’re the only thing I want to wear at 8 months pregnant. Unfortunately I only have one pair, plus I’m still working and have to keep the wardrobe somewhat professional.

But anyway, I highly suggest this pair. They’re a little more on the legging side, but they are SO comfy.

3rd pregnancy in – I feel like I have tried on EVERY pair out there. I love my James Jeans – in the Twiggy cut. They have a full panel and stay up so you aren’t yanking at them all day. I bought them on myHabit for under $40 (otherwise $180 would have been tough to swallow since this is the last go round). I also like the Maternal America skinnies with the demi panel.

My name is Laura and I am an assistant designer for an Australian maternity label called Szabo Maternity. Szabo offer numerous styles of jeans including the skinny jean. A lot of time and research has gone into the making and fit of these jeans and they are fantastic. I wear them and I’m not even pregnant! My pics would be the Super Skinny (which has an under belly band) and the Worn in Skinny Jean (with a comfortable full belly band). Both of these styles are available at http://www.ematernity.com.au/. Hopefully your search for the perfect maternity jean is over.
