Elegance is not just for girls

Elegance – that wonderful, and often elusive quality that makes us smile whenever we think of it.  The word “elegance” brings to mind images of lush patterns in a European bistro, the feel of the softest fabric you’ve ever laid your hands on – you know -“elegance” – it’s what we live for!  At Little Crown Interiors, we are regularly asked for “elegance” in girl’s room designs, but we see no reason why opening the door to a beautifully made boy’s room can’t inspire the same sense of breathlessness.

Here’s a room that we recently completed for a client in New York, and we think “elegant” is the perfect word to describe this beautiful nursery design.

We started out with the fabric – a gorgeous gray damask pattern, found throughout the room in damask baby bedding, curtains and accent textiles.  Damask is just one of those special things that never seems to go out of style, and can always be made to look both relevant and regal.

To get the perfect look that our client wanted, we knew that pattern repetition would be key.  So, in addition to the repeated damask pattern throughout the textiles, there is a subtle damask print in the large tone-on-tone nursery rug.

The crowning glory in this room is clearly the large three dimensional wall crown.  Perfect for a little prince, this exquisite piece of wall art is our must-have item for this nursery design.

Accents of the palest of blues, delicate knobs to adorn the dresser, subtle painted stripes and beautifully made traditional style nursery furniture all come together to create elegance that’s fit for a king!

Creating an elegant nursery requires a special measure of thought, because a nursery also needs to be a practical place.  While mirrored surfaces, and opulent details are a must, it’s imperative that the nursery be safe and that decorative items be out of reach of little hands.
